The news that Hull City boss Phil Brown has been put on gardening leave has prompted bookmaker, Skybet, to begin betting on who will be the next Hull City manager. Brown won't even have had chance to get his lawnmower out before odds on his replacement were being priced up following the news of his departure, such is the the popularity of next manager betting.
Brown's exit from the KC Stadium comes amidst revelations that two of his players, Jimmy Bullard and Nick Barmby were seen fighting on the banks of the River Humber last week, embarrassingly in front of members of the Women's Institute, who were on a march across the Humber Bridge at the time. It is not known whether Brown's handling of that incident or the fact Hull are second bottom of the Premier League following four consecutive defeats is the reason for him being put on gardening leave but it is unlikely that he will be returning to the club he was has been in charge of since 2006.

The early favourite in the betting to replace Brown is Steve Coppell who has been out of work since leaving Reading last summer. Coppell guided the Royals to promotion and a season of safety in the Premiership before taking them down, almost mirroring what Brown has done with Hull. Coppull is a 9/4 chance but it is not known how that appointment would go down with fans and whether he would have what it takes to make the immediate impact needed to keep the Tigers in the Premier League.
Gareth Southgate, Paul Jewell and Gary Megson are all 5/1 joint second favourites and given all have experience of relegation battles, it would be no surprise to see City Chairman, Adam Pearson turn to one of these men. However, it is unlikely to be Jewell who was sacked by Pearson when both were at Derby County.
Brian Horton has been placed in temporary charge of first team affairs and there could be a bit of value in backing the former Man City boss at odds of 20/1 on the off chance he has an immediate impact on results. Other names in the betting to be next manager at this stage include Alan Curbishley, Peter Reid, Mark Hughes and David O'Leary.
Steve Coppell 9/4
Gareth Southgate 5/1
Paul Jewell 5/1
Gary Megson 5/1
Alan Curbishley 6/1
Peter Reid 8/1
Kevin Keegan 12/1
David O'Leary 14/1
Mark Hughes 14/1
Peter Taylor 16/1
Ally McCoist 16/1
Brian Horton 20/1
