Chelsea v Southampton Odds: Back Frank Lampard to continue fine goalscoring form against the Saints

Chelsea and Southampton meet for the second time in 12 days, with the hosts looking for another comprehensive victory following their 5-1 FA Cup thrashing of the Saints at St Mary’s earlier this month. However, the south coast side rested the likes of star man Rickie Lambert that day and will be desperate to put up more of a fight in the Premier league encounter at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

Chelsea have lost both their home matches so far this year, with their shock 1-0 league defeat to rock-bottom QPR followed by a surprising 2-0 loss to Swansea in the Capital One Cup. This will give underdogs Saints a glimmer of hope as they bid to upset the odds and pile the pressure on Rafa Benitez. The visitors have been handed long odds of 10/1 with Paddy Power to conjure up a huge upset, while a draw at 5/1 could be the way to go. Chelsea are unsurprisingly the hot 1/4 favourites to get back to winning ways on home soil.

The Blues responded to the miserable Swansea defeat with a 4-0 thrashing away to Stoke last weekend, meaning they have now won five of their last six league games. They are also unbeaten in their last seven matches against the Saints and can be backed at 17/10 to win with three or four total goals in the match, which has happened in the last three league meetings between the sides.

The Saints may have been crushed in the FA Cup but their league form has been promising, with Nigel Adkins’ men unbeaten in their last four matches. They will also be full of confidence having beaten their relegation rivals Aston Villa at the weekend, which was a big win for the Saints. A second consecutive away victory would consolidate their 15th standing, whilst moving them five points clear of the bottom three.

Demba Ba scored twice on his debut against the Saints earlier this month and it is no surprise to see the Senegalese striker installed as the 5/2 favourite to open the scoring on Wednesday evening, while he can be backed at 2/1 to bag another brace. Fernando Torres was booed off the pitch when he was substituted in the defeat to Swansea but could win back the support by scoring for the first time since just before Christmas, with the Spaniard priced at 11/5 to score first.

Meanwhile Chelsea's second highest goalscorer of all time, Frank Lampard, has four goals in his last five games and looks like a decent bet at evens to extend his tally to 195 goals by scoring anytime on Wednesday. It is worth mentioning that Chelsea’s vice captain has also scored five goals in his last four appearances against the Saints.

Chelsea may dominate the first goalscorer market but it is worth remembering that they have only scored in one of their five domestic home matches since Benitez's arrival, although they will no doubt still be confident of breaching a defence that has conceded 24 goals on the road this season.

Rickie Lambert scored his ninth league goal of the campaign last weekend to take his tally four in his last five games on the road. Southampton’s goal machine is an attractive bet at 12/1 to once again open the scoring, while he can be backed at 7/2 to score anytime with Paddy Power Bookmakers.

The outcome of this match will largely depend on which Chelsea team decide to show up. On one hand they have the potential to humiliate teams with their attacking superiority (Aston Villa 8-0), however in recent weeks they have fired blanks on home soil and as a consequence have suffered shock defeats (QPR and Swansea). Southampton will arrive fired up and ready to do battle but if Chelsea turn up in the right mood then it could easily turn into a question of how many.
