Atletico Madrid v Celtic Odds: Falcao hot favourite to be first scorer

Click here for the latest odds and betting preview for the Celtic v Atletico Madrid match on Wednesday 30th November 2011.

Celtic will have to upset the odds if they are to get anything from their opening Europa League match against Atletico Madrid on Thursday night. The Scottish side head to Spain for the Group I clash at the Vincente Calderon Stadium as 7/1 underdogs, with Atletico looking worthy favourites at odds of 2/5 with Bet 365 bookmakers.

The draw can be backed at odds of 7/2 and that might be the limit of Celtic's ambitions as they look to reverse an ugly run of away form. They have failed to win away from home in their last six attempts, losing four, in the Europa League and their record against Spanish opposition is little better.

They have failed to win on their last eleven visits to Spanish opposition in Europe, losing eight, and they have only managed to score one goal in the last five against Spanish sides.

It doesn't bode well for a match against Atletico, who are renowned for their defensive steel under new coach Gregorio Manzano. He has overseen a run of four clean sheets in their first six matches of the season, during which time they have conceded only two. We fancy they could be well worth backing to win to nil on Thursday and that is available at odds of 5/4 with B365.

They have struggled in La Liga, drawing one and losing one, so far and both of those games have involved under 2.5 goals, with under 2.5 available at a nicely priced 43/40 this week.

Meanwhile, Celtic probably consider themselves luck to be in the competition at all as they replaced FC Sion, the team who beat them 3-1 in qualifiers, after the Swiss side were found guilty of fielding ineligible players. However, Celtic's joy was short-lived as they must do without the injured Scott Brown and Anthony Stokes, while Daniel Majstrorovic is suspended and Badr El-Kaddouri is cup-tied.

Manager Neil Lennon might have half an eye on the Old Firm SPL clash against Rangers on Sunday, but he would do well to remind his players of the threat posed by Atletico's Radamel Falcao.

The Colombian striker took a liking to this tournament last year, scoring a record 17 goals in 14 appearances, as he helped Porto win the tournament. He scored 39 goals in 42 outings for the Portuguese side before moving to Madrid for €40m in the summer, and he starts as hot favourite at 7/2 to be first scorer with Bet365.com.

His Madrid side have never lost to a Scottish team at home and it is difficult to see that trend ending against this Celtic outfit, with the correct score of 1-0 the 11/2 favourite result at this stage.
