Italy Are The Value In The Betting For The Euro Under 21 Championships

The Euro Under-21 Championships get underway in Poland on Friday and this year's tournament has been expanded to include twelve teams divided into three groups, with each group winner and the runner-up with the best record going through to the semi-finals...

Sweden (each way) @ 16 / 1
Gerard Deulofeu Top Goalscorer @ 10 / 1

The Favourites

It is Spain who head into the competition as 7/2 favourites and the four-time winners have obvious pedigree, albeit that price is perhaps a bit on the short side when you consider they are in the same Group B as a fine Serbia side, the 2015 runners up Portugal (7/1) and Macedonia.

It would be a surprise if Spain didn't progress as they have so much quality going forward, with Gerard Deulofeu scoring eight goals in qualifying. The Everton man, who takes his country's penalties, is a tempting 10/1 to be the tournament's top scorer (Sky Bet).

However, Spain finished behind Sweden in qualifying and we prefer to look elsewhere for a bit of value in the outright market...

Germany are second-favourites at 4/1 (Paddy Power) after winning all ten of their qualifiers but Stefan Kuntz has lost several first choice players to the senior side as they are competing in the Confederations Cup.

The Germans are in a tough group C with Czech Republic, Denmark and an Italy side that take our fancy.

Top Tip - Italy

The Italians have an excellent pedigree at the Under-21 Euros as they have won the tournament a record five times. The 2013 runners up boast a number of players with experience at senior level, including Milan's highly-rated goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma, and we can't believe that they are as big as 7/1 (Ladbrokes).

Considering they are almost twice the price of Spain and Germany, we fancy Italy are very much the value here.

Sweden Over England

Finally, England will be looking to replicate the recent World Cup success of their Under-20 side but there is a reason that the English haven't won the Under-21 Euros since 1984.

Their players often arrive at these tournaments drained of energy following a gruelling domestic season and Aidy Bothroyd's men won't have things easy in Group A as they are joined by tournament hosts Poland, as well as Slovakia and reigning champions Sweden.

The Swedes catch the eye as they finished above Spain in qualifying, winning seven and drawing three of their games in the process, and they have the advantage of their players being relatively fresh as their Allsvenskan league season is only twelve games old.

At 16/1 with Bet 365, the holders are well worth an each-way punt at 16/1.
