Who will start in goal v Algeria?

England's World Cup campaign didn't quite get off to the start that fans had hoped for against the USA on Saturday. Despite taking the lead courtesy of a Steven Gerrard goal after just four minutes and looking comfortable for the majority of the first half, a speculative Clint Dempsey strike five minutes before the break was spilled by England goalkeeper Robert Green who saw his blunder result in an equaliser for the United States - much to the dismay of millions of England fans watching on TV! England failed to take their chances in the second half and the game finished 1-1.

Bookies makes have been quick to react to Green's howler and are offering odds on who will be the England number 1 on Friday for Fabio Capello's sides second Group C game against Algeria in Cape Town with Green the 4/5 favourite with Paddy Power to retain his place in the starting XI. It is somewhat ironic that in the build up to the USA match, much debate surrounded who Capello would select to start in goals with many critics suggesting that the position was potentially the achilles heel of England's World Cup hopes. Those fears were proven correct with Green's howler and the question now is whether Capello opts to remain loyal to his chosen number one.

David James was the odds on favourite to start in goals against America given his experience and is now an 11/8 chance to wear the gloves in what is a crucial game against Algeria with Joe Hart outsider of the three at 11/2 but the betting suggests at this stage that Capello will remain stubborn and stick with Green.

Whoever starts in goals on Friday will be all too aware that the pressure will be greater than ever not to make any mistakes and this could well be a make or break decision for Fabio Capello, who will not even want to begin to imagine the reaction should his chosen #1 cause England further embarrassment.
