Expect A Bad Tempered Clash When Italy And Sweden Meet In Milan

The Story So Far

The Italians and head coach, Gian Piero Ventura in particular, are under massive pressure as they trail 1-0 from the first leg against the Swedes but they are 4/7 favourites (Betfair) for this match at the San Siro in Milan.

Ventura cannot afford to get this wrong as he has come in for some stinging criticism regarding his tactics and he has a few selection issues with Marco Verratti suspended and Daniele De Rossi injured, so Jorginho could be in line to make his first start for the national team following some impressive performances for Napoli.

Such is the disharmony surrounding the Azzurri at the moment, it is difficult to back them at odds-on as they laboured to a 1-0 win over Israel and a 1-1 draw against Macedonia in their final two home games during the group stages of World Cup qualifying.

Sweden are 13/2 to win or 14/5 to draw but their record on the road is poor, with Janne Andersson's men winning two of their five World Cup qualifiers away, losing in France, Belarus and Netherlands in the process.

Cards Galore

The Swedes' five away games in the group stages of qualifying witnessed fifteen goals so over 2.5 goals might be worth a look at 7/5 (Bet 365), although it is a difficult market to call and unders is 8/15 on.

Instead, we prefer to focus on the card markets following a bad-tempered first leg of this tie, during which Marcus Berg accused the Italians of trying to get him sent off. The Al Ain forward, who was sent off in his most recent league outing for his club, was booked for dissent in the first match ni Sweden and he is 7/4 to be shown a card in Milan (Unibet).

That looks a decent bet as Berg claimed "it will be a damn war" when talking about Monday night's match and he is a forward who tends to put himself about a bit, with the 31-year-old picking up 20 yellow cards and two reds in the past three seasons at club level alone.

A sending off on Monday can be backed at 2/1 and this is a fixture that could explode into life.
