Liverpool v Man Utd Betting: Tempting odds for Rooney to be shown a card

The much-anticipated clash between bitter rivals Liverpool and Manchester United gets underway on Saturday lunchtime at Anfield. United start as marginal favourites at an industry best price of 6/4 with William Hill, although Liverpool have a good record against the reigning champions and can be backed at 11/5, with the draw priced 21/10.

United have started the league season in much the same fashion that they finished the last as they are unbeaten in the Premier League and have only lost one of the last sixteen matches. They have only failed to score in two of their last 24 in the division and have scored in all of their away matches.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are yet to keep a clean sheet at Anfield this season, conceding against Sunderland, Bolton and Wolves, and both teams to score on Saturday is 4/6 on. Liverpool had started the season well but a couple of defeats at the hands of Stoke and Tottenham looks to have dented confidence and they were far from convincing in their recent win over Everton.

Luis Suarez has shown signs of returning to form with two goals in his last two matches and he is 7/1 in the first goalscorer betting, but all eyes will be on Wayne Rooney this weekend.

Former Everton man Rooney makes his return to Merseyside a little more than a week after his red card in England's Euro 2012 qualifying draw with Montenegro. WilliamHill.com are offering a special of Rooney to be shown a card in the match at 3/1 but United fans will be hoping the match is remembered for his goals.

He has nine goals already this term and is 6/1 to score first, while he is 25/1 to score a hat trick, which could be worth a look as there was a hat-trick scored in both of the Liverpool v Man Utd league meetings last term.

Meanwhile, there have been five red cards in the last seven meetings between the two sides at Anfield and a red card to be shown on Saturday can be backed at a best price of 12/5, which looks good as Liverpool's seven league matches this season have witnessed four red cards.

There have also been four penalties in the last five meetings and a penalty to be awarded is available at 11/4.

Liverpool could be boosted by the return of Glen Johnson as they look to continue a decent record against United - they have won four of the last six meetings. United are without Darren Fletcher and Rafael, although Nemanja Vidic and Tom Cleverley could be fit, and on current form we have to give them the edge.

It promises to be a hugely entertaining affair and the correct score of 2-1 to United is 8/1, while the United win by  a margin of one goal is available at 3/1 as they look to confirm their superiority over their rivals and maintain their place at the top of the league.
