Chelsea v Newcastle Odds: Torres Great Bet to Score at Stamford Bridge

Click here for the latest odds and betting preview for Chelsea v Newcastle on Wednesday 2nd May 2012.

Odds on favourites Chelsea take on Newcastle at Stamford Bridge on Sunday knowing that a win will pretty much guarantee them runners up spot in the Premier League this season. It is not a position that they will be particularly be pleased about; however, the fact they were struggling to stay in the top four at one stage in the season, makes their achievement that much better. They will start the match with odds of around 1/4 with the draw being an 11/2 option and a Newcastle win at a very tempting 12/1. These odds are available from VC Bet.

It is understandable that Chelsea will be somewhat disappointed following their defeat against Manchester United last week at Old Trafford. That defeat cost them any real chance of retaining their title, and may have put manager, Carlo Ancelotti’s job under more pressure. There has certainly been plenty of activity in the Next Chelsea manager market. Nonetheless the ‘Blues’ will want to end the season on a high and produce a good performance for their fans in this final league game at the ‘Bridge’ of the season.

Before the defeat at Old Trafford last week, Chelsea had produced a remarkable run of form that saw them claim 25 points from nine games which took them past Arsenal in the title race and within a hairsbreadth of United at the top. Somewhat ironically is the fact that this good form started not too long after the arrival of Fernando Torres at the club after his record signing from Liverpool. Although Torres has only contributed one goal in his 16 matches, his presence certainly seemed to have raised the form of the team so perhaps he has been a little over maligned and perhaps he can add to that meagre tally on Sunday. Torres in fact has odds of 10/3 to score the opening goal and is a 3/1 chance to score two or more goals in the match. With the pressure more or less off him now, this could be his time to strike hard.

Despite the controversial sacking of previous boss, Chris Hughton, Newcastle will be reasonably happy with their first season back in the top flight. They have remained a mid-table side more or less throughout the season, but it is a decent goalscorer they lack, after selling Andy Carroll to Liverpool. They do not have great scoring form either against Chelsea, failing to score in five of their last seven games against them and in six of their last seven at Stamford Bridge. That said, they did beat Chelsea at the ‘Bridge’ back in November by 4-3 in the League Cup and did hold them to a 1-1 draw at St James Park in the reverse Premier League fixture earlier this season.

As far as the line-ups are concerned, it would seem likely that Nicolas Anelka will be on the bench leaving Ancelotti to start with Torres and Didier Drogba up front. Malouda should also be in the starting eleven alongside, Frank Lampard, Michael Essien and Ramires in midfield, while there will be some deliberation as to who will play alongside John Terry in the back four, will it be David Luiz or Alex?.

Newcastle have lost skipper Kevin Nolan for the rest of the season, which means that Shola Ameobi will start up front alongside Peter Lovenkrands with Joey Barton taking up a more central midfield role. They will also be without the injured Stephen Ireland whose likely replacement will be Ryan Taylor.

Scorelines are always hard to predict, but this may just be one of the easier ones, particularly if one considers Newcastle’s lack of a goalscorer. With Chelsea wanting to put on a show it could be that the ‘Magpies’ could on the receiving end of a hiding with the suggestion being a 3-0 or 4-0 win for the ‘Blues’. These scorelines can be backed at 13/2 and 19/2 respectively with Victor Chandler.
