Blackburn Rovers host Premier League champions to be Manchester United this Saturday at Ewood Park in the full knowledge that defeat would put them in very serious relegation trouble. Even a draw for Rovers would not necessarily be a good result, although that would depend very much on the results of the other relegation threatened teams. United however know that they need just a point from either one of their two remaining games to claim their 19th league title, but will undoubtedly want to settle matters on Saturday. VC Bet are offering 3/4 odds on that United will claim the three points, while the draw has odds of 13/5 with a Blackburn win at 17/4.
Blackburn boss, Steve Kean will want his players to completely forget the result of the reverse fixture between the two clubs back in November at Old Trafford, when Dimitar Berbatov went on the rampage netting five times for the ‘Red Devils’ in their 7-1 romp. Amazingly Berbatov is not guaranteed of a start on Saturday which is why he has only been given odds by VC Bet of 5/1 to be the first goalscorer and odds of 13/10 to score at anytime. The favourite in fact to score the first goal is Wayne Rooney, with odds of 4/1.
It is highly likely that midfielder, Darren Fletcher could return to the United ranks on Saturday. The Scot played just over an hour for the Reserves in the North League Final the other night and boss Sir Alex Ferguson has made it no secret that he would like Fletcher available for the Champions League final at the end of the month. Ironically and perhaps an omen for this match, United’s opponents in that final was Blackburn and it was they who won the match by 2-1.
The biggest problem that Rovers have had this season is their lack of goals. They are the league’s lowest scorers in 2011 and their top scorer is Nikola Kalinic with a paltry five. At least they should be stronger in defence this time around, with Michel Salgado and Phil Jones both likely to return. However, doubts remain regarding the participation of Ruben Rochina, who has a shoulder injury, while definately out are Ryan Nelson and David Dunn.
This match looks set up for United to win, certainly Sir Alex Ferguson would love to claim the three points and get his team focussed on the Champions League. He would also love to win as a lesson to the Blackburn board, which were responsible for sacking their former manager and his great friend, Sam Allardyce earlier this season. He went public with his opinion of why he thought ‘Big Sam’ was badly treated and he now knows that a win here could effectively put Blackburn deep in the Premier League relegation battle. Blackburn, with a difficult final game against Wolves away to come have odds of 7/2 with Victor Chandler to be relegated.
United will come to this game in great spirit, looking to win and will show no mercy to their opponents. They know that they are a far better team than Blackburn and although there will be no 7-1 thrashing this time around, a modest win by a couple of goals is very much ‘on the cards’. A United win by 2-0 looks a sound bet which has odds of 7/1.
