Stoke v Liverpool Odds: Score draw looks a good bet as Torres returns to form

Liverpool travel to Stoke for a match that just a few weeks ago would have been a battle of two of the Premiership strugglers with Liverpool in apparent disarray, but then Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres clicked into gear and they are suddenly Champions League contenders. The reality is they're probably somewhere in between, and they face a tough task at the Britannia Stadium on Saturday. Stoke themselves have struggled for form of late, although they have been the victims of some unfortunate decisions in several games. But the table doesn't lie and they are floundering in 16th place in the Premier League following a run of just one win in five games, and that win came deservedly against Birmingham in their last match at the Brittania. They will be boosted by the news that Ryan Shawcross returns from suspension and will most likely replace Danny Higginbotham at the heart of the defence, and Jermaine Pennant will have a point to prove against one of his former employers. Their leading scorer Kenwyne Jones was a one-time Liverpool target during the Benitez era and although he is unpredictable if he is in the mood he could cause Liverpool all sort of problems with his direct style of play. However, scoring first hasn't been Stoke's strong point this season, and against Birmingham it was the first time they had scored in the first 45 minutes at home in the Premier League this season. Particularly as Liverpool have drawn four games already this season having struggled to close matches out after going ahead, and they have an abysmal record away from Anfield with only one win on the road this term.

Both sides have struggled to keep it tight in defence so goals look likely in this match, especially with Fernando Torres appearing to be returning to his best in the past few matches. Stoke have conceded 18 so far, Liverpool 15, and the Torres effect should assist the away side while Stoke's direct approach play could cause a shaky Liverpool defence problems. Betting on there being over 2.5 goals with Ladbrokes is 4/7 at the moment.

Liverpool could be without the surprisingly influential Sotirios Kyrgiakos, and Glen Johnson is also a doubt, but in better news Raul Meireles is likely to make a return on the wing as he tries to adapt to the rigours of the English game. They are unbeaten in four matches in the league, drawing disappointingly 1-1 last time out at Wigan, but the return to form of Gerrard and Torres could be a pivotal part of their season. Torres is favourite to score first with odds of 7/2 with Ladbrokes, while the key battle could be how the Stoke midfield pair of Rory Delap and Dean Whitehead cope with Gerrard.

It is a big game for both sides and their respective struggles with keeping a clean sheet this season mean that there should be a few goals to keep everyone entertained. The 1-1 draw is the favourite result with Ladbrokes at the moment, and that is at odds of 11/2 and could be worth a punt.
