Man City v Birmingham Betting: Mancini's men backed to secure Premiership win at Eastlands

Man City will have to show far more ambition against Birmingham on Saturday than they did in their previous dour home fixture against Man United if they are to win over the sceptics and prove they are a legitimate force for the title. The game against struggling Birmingham City at Eastlands possibly comes at the right time for them, and the bookmakers certainly seem to think so, as Man City are strong favourites at a best price of 4/9 with PaddyPower bookmakers in the betting, with Birmingham a 7/1 outside shot and the draw is 16/5.

City's previous game against Man United was meant to be a mouth-watering tie, all blood and thunder with plenty of goal mouth action as the "noisy neighbours" finally come good on the pitch. But in reality it was a damp squib with little entertainment, and Roberto Mancini took severe criticism for his defensive tactics and saw his odds of being the next Premier League manager to leave shorten.

Man City are fourth in the Premier League and in their previous match against West Brom they showed a real zest to play football, but their inspiration that night Mario Balotelli is suspended for the Birmingham game following his dismissal in the same match. The burden of scoring goals is therefore left on the shoulders of top scorer Carlos Tevez and he is 13/5 in the betting to be the first goalscorer, while the enigmatic Emmanuel Adebayor is a best price in the betting at 9/2 with paddypower.com.

17th placed Birmingham City meanwhile have had a season of real struggle so far, as new signings Alexander Hleb and Nikola Zigic have failed to settle as quickly as they would have hoped. They have yet to win a game away from home and have won only one league win since August. The fact their top scorer is midfielder Craig Gardner tells its own story, so striker Cameron Jerome will be hoping to improve his tally on Saturday and he is a best price of 11/1 in the betting with PaddyPower to score first. Their cause is not helped by the long term absence of James McFadden, but Hleb might get a start in a five man midfield.

The corresponding fixture last season finished 5-1 to Man City, and with Birmingham having conceded 17 goals already this season a resounding scoreline in the home side's favour could be on. The same score this season is currently 45/1 incidentally. But more realistically the correct score of 2-0 to Man City looks to be a good bet with PaddyPower at 11/2, particularly as Mancini's men have the second best defensive record in the league, keeping six clean sheets in the process. Also if you fancy Birmingham to score, the Man City win by two clear goals is 16/5 in the betting with paddypower.com and could be worth a punt.
