With the group qualifying stages now completed and just the play-offs to be decided, interest will start to turn to the Euro 2012 finals in Poland and Ukraine. It is no surprise that defending European and world champions Spain are the hot favourites in the betting at 11/4 with William Hill, while a stuttering England are priced 9/1, with Republic of Ireland a huge 100/1 at this stage.
Spain served up a reminder of the quality they are capable of during their 3-1 win over Scotland in their final group qualifying match. There were several second string players in the starting line up but there was no let up in quality as they cruised to victory and maintained their 100% qualifying record as they won eight from eight.
Only Germany could match that perfect record as they won ten from ten to show that the potential we saw at the World Cup in 2010 is well and truly being fulfilled. They possess a young squad and could prove tempting at 7/2 to win Euro 2012 as they so often produce the goods on the big stage.
Holland are then the best of the rest at 5/1 and their hopes of a 100% record in qualifying were ended by Sweden in their final group match but they still comfortably qualified for the finals.
It is then England who are fourth favourites at 9/1 in the betting with WilliamHill.com and that is perhaps a little surprising after their stuttering recent displays and persistent failure to go beyond the quarter-finals of major competitions.
SkyBet have in fact opened a specials market on the stage of England's elimination next summer and they are 15/8 to go out in the quarter-finals, with an early exit in the group stage priced 9/4, with a semi-final appearance available at 3/1 and a runner-up spot 7/1.
Whenever England do exit the competition or even win it, it will of course spell the end of Fabio Capello's reign as manager and there is sure to be plenty of speculation between now and next summer on who will replace the Italian, with Tottenham's Harry Redknapp the 8/11 favourite to be next England manager with Hills.
The only other home nation left in the competition is Republic of Ireland and they of course will have to come through a play-off match to be sure of their place. The memories of their controversial play-off defeat to France a few years ago will still be raw and they are currently a massive 100/1 to win the tournament.
Elsewhere, France secured their place in Poland and Ukraine with a controversial penalty to earn a 1-1 draw against Bosnia-Hercegovina, with the French side available at 11/1, while Italy can be backed at the same price.
