This week sees the return of the biggest club competition in the world with match day 1 of the 2016/17 Champions League taking place and we are once again in for another thrilling season of action. The tournament is wide open this season with four or five teams at least in with a shot of going all the way and we have taken a closer look at the betting.
- No team has ever successfully defended the Champions :League since its inception back in 1992
- Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich have won five of the last six Champions Leagues between them

Big Three Dominating The Betting
The outright Champions League betting for this season is dominated by the so-called big three with Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich all fancied to go deep this term. Between the three of them, they have won the last four Champions League and it would be a major surprise if all three were not in the latter stages come next spring.
Real Madrid (11/2) have won two of the last three tournaments but they have to overcome the hoodoo as they look to become the first successive winners of the Champions League ever. They clearly have the squad needed with the likes of Ronaldo and Bale although they were quiet in the transfer window and one or two injuries for their key players could derail their chances.
Barcelona are the favourites to go all the way at 7/2 with Bet Victor and it is easy to see why with Messi, Neymar and Suarez the best front three in the game, perhaps of all time. The goals are sure to come for the Catalan Giants and they are more than capable of firing them to another title as they did in 2015 but backing them at such a short price in a competitive tournament like this is always a risk.
Carlo Ancelotti is one of the few men to have won the Champions League as a player and a Manager and the Italian will be hoping to add to that tally in his new role at Bayern Munich. The German giants last won the Champions League back in 2013 and are more than capable of going all the way again. They have goals all over the pitch and if Robert Lewandowski stays fit and healthy, plenty will be interested in them at around 4/1.
Juventus Can Shock The Big Three
Punters looking for a slightly bigger priced punt have two or three alternatives with Atletico (15/1) certainly on the short list. Diego Simeone and his men are twice losing finalists in recent years which is interesting although they are likely to come up just short again you would think.
Pep Guadiola has already made a big impact at Man City with four wins on the spin in the League and the Manager's quality in Europe has to give them a chance. A tough draw in the group stages is a worry but that is reflected in their price of 12/1 to go all the way with no team likely to want to play them in the latter stages.
Juventus are the other team of interest in the outright market with the Italian giants primed for a major assault on the big trophy. The Bianconeri went all the way to the Final two years ago and they have spent big in the summer despite the loss of Paul Pogba to Man United. Their defence remains second to none and with Pjanic now in midfield to pull the strings and Gonzalo Higuain signed from Napoli to play alongside Dybala up front, they certainly won't be short of goals this season, which means they do make appeal in the outright market at 12/1 with Paddy Power.
Paulo Dybala might on the face of it be playing second fiddle to Gonzalo Higuain at Juve but he is a fine goalscorer himself and as my colleague Steve Chambo has argued in his Champions League Top Scorer assessment, he can have a major impact on the tournament.
Other Bets This Season?
Away from the outright market there are a number of other side bets to take a look at including the highest scoring team. This will be as hotly contested as any with the big three teams all well fancied as you would expect but there might be a slightly bigger priced contender to consider further down.
We have already mentioned the exploits of Pep Guardiola at Man City with the Spaniard giving the Citizens an extra edge in attack since arriving at the club. They have won four from four in the League and cruised through their Champions League play-off, putting five past Steaua away from home, and provided Sergio Aguero stays fit, backing Man City to be highest scorers at 8/1 with Bet Victor will give you a run for your money.
