West Brom v Man Utd Odds: Back the first goal to be a header in the betting

Manchester United begin the defence of their Premier League crown with a trip to the Hawthorns as they take on West Bromwich Albion in the live Sunday afternoon kick-off. The Reds are bidding for a 20th top flight title and they are 8/15 on to start with a win according to Bet 365, while West Brom are an 11/2 punt and the draw can be backed at odds of 3/1.

United's away record was disappointing last year as they failed to win fourteen of their nineteen away league matches, but they still had enough in the bank to claim the title with relative ease in the end.

West Brom meanwhile enjoyed a resurgence under Roy Hodgson as he guided them away from relegation to a respectable finish of eleventh in the table. However, recent history is very much against Albion as they have failed to win an opening day match in the Premier League (drawing two and losing three of five so far).

Of greater concern to Hodgson will be the fact his side kept just two clean sheets last year, the lowest amount by a team in a Premier League season. Goals certainly look to be on the menu on Sunday as the last seven meetings between the two teams have each involved over 2.5 goals, with over 2.5 8/11 odds on this weekend.

It could be worth a look at the method of the first goal to be scored being a header on Sunday as West Brom conceded the joint-most goals from corners last season (14), while United score more goals with headers than any other team in the league (18). Bet365.com offer 4/1 for the first goal on Sunday to be a header and that looks very tempting.

Sir Alex Ferguson has been busy strengthening his side for another tilt at the title as he brought in Ashley Young, David De Gea and Phil Jones over the summer. The arrival of Young appears to have had a positive effect on Nani as they battle for a place on the wing and Nani scored two in the 3-2 Community Shield win over Man City last weekend, with B365 offering 7/1 for him to be first scorer on Sunday.

Wayne Rooney is 4/1 favourite to score first though after he scored two in his last three appearances against West Brom, opening the scoring each time.

Fore West Brom, there are fitness doubts over their top scorer from last season, Peter Odemwingie, and new signing Shane Long could start. Long is 9/1 to score first after his £6.5m move from Reading, and he could joint Ben Foster and Zoltan Gera in making his debut for the club.

West Brom did come back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at Old Trafford last year and only lost two matches when Hodgson took over. However, United have won their last four matches at the Hawthorns and it is difficult to see anything other than a United win, with the correct score of 2-1 available at 7/1.
