World Cup 2014 Betting Preview

Even before English referee, Howard Webb had evaded the wrath of the Dutch players at the end of the 2010 World Cup Final in Johannesburg, Bookmakers were already rolling out the odds for the 2014 version to be played in Brazil. Unsurprisingly, Brazil has been made 4/1 favourites with Ladbrokes to win the tournament, last played in their country in 1950, which we think, even at this stage of proceedings are excellent, particularly as they will not have to qualify.

Argentina are joint second in the betting at 6/1, with the shortest price European teams being World Cup Champions, Spain also at 6/1, with Germany next at 8s; England fans can back their team at 12/1.

2014 World Cup Odds Comparison

As most soccer fans will know, there has never been a European World Cup winner when the tournament has been held in South America or Mexico, a fact which should tip the scales hugely towards a South American victor. However ladbrokes in their wisdom are making Europe favourites in their ‘Winning Continent Market’, with odds of 4/5, while quoting a South American winner at 5/4. Already a double punt on a Brazil outright win and South American winning continent looks like a good easy money bet!

Italy has come close to winning in a South American or Mexican based World Cup, as have Holland and Germany. They have all made finals, but all ended up second best. Czechoslovakia was also runners up in 1962 in Chile, but of course that country has now been divided into the Czech Republic and Slovakia and play independently of each other. Interestingly both can be backed to win the 2014 World Cup at 150/1.

Obviously it is too far ahead to make any sensible predictions, outside of the obvious, but English fans might want to take advantage of the 5/4 on offer for England to be World Cup hosts in 1918. It looks to be between England and Russia, although it is anticipated that the joint Iberian (Spain and Portugal) bid might carry significant substance. As it stands Russia are 2/1 with Iberia is 3/1.

2014 World Cup Winner Odds

4/1 Brazil
6/1 Argentina
6/1 Spain
8/1 Germany
9/1 Holland
12/1 England
12/1 Italy
20/1 France
20/1 Portugal
33/1 Uruguay
33/1 Chile
