Two sides at the wrong end of the Championship table meet at Deepdale on Friday night as Preston North End take on Hull City in front of the Sky cameras. Both the Lilywhites and Tigers find themselves in the relegation zone on 14 and 15 points respectively and whilst it may only be November, if results don’t begin to improve for either of these sides soon, a relegation battle will become a realistic prospect with the halfway stage of the season fast approaching, making this encounter a must win for all concerned.
Preston are favourites to win the game with Bet365 and Paddy Power offering the best odds about the home side at 5/4 but with just two wins from their opening eight fixtures at home it is difficult to make a case for this representing any form of value.
It must be said though that Hull’s away form has been equally as dire as their opponent’s home form. Nigel Pearson’s side has won just once in eight on the road since being relegated from the Premier League and are 21/10 to make that two wins on Friday night. However, they have drawn their last three away from the KC Stadium, which suggests that they may be improving and the odds of a fourth consecutive point on their travels is 23/10, a result that would certainly favour the visitors more than it would Darren Ferguson’s Preston side.
The son of Man Utd boss, Sir Alex Ferguson, has been in charge of PNE since January and after narrowly avoiding relegation last season, there was much hope that improvement would be made this term with several of his own signings coming in. However, things appear to be going from bad to worse at Deepdale and Tuesday’s defeat at home to Barnsley in front of the club’s lowest attendance since getting promoted to this division ten years ago made their frustrations be known at the final whistle with some calling for Ferguson to be sacked.
It was ironically a year ago this week that Fergie Jnr was sacked by his previous employers Peterborough United who also found themselves on 14 points and in the Championship relegation zone and anything other than maximum points against Hull City could result in a horrible twist of fate for the former Man Utd and Wolves player 12 months on from his first managerial dismissal.
Hull will be all too aware of Preston’s plight and will see this as the perfect opportunity to pick up three points and at the odds, the away win marginally looks the pick of the bets between two out of form teams. However, the fact that both teams have been leaking plenty of goals of late does point towards this being an entertaining game.
Preston has conceded in each of its last six home matches and fixtures involving Hull City as the away team this season have averaged over three goals per game which points towards more than 2.5 goals in this game being a good betting opportunity at 4/5 with Bet365.
The favourite to open the scoring in this match is PNE striker, Jon Parkin, who is the club’s top scorer so far this season with seven goals and is a 6/1 chance to score first against the team for which he used to play. Jay Simpson and Mark Cullen represent Hull’s best chance of scoring according to Paddy power who are 8/1 about the pair being first goalscorer. For those who like to back players to score on their return to former clubs, Kevin Kilbane returns to Deepdale for the first time since leaving in 1996 and is 9/1 with Paddy Power to score at anytime on the ground where he started his career.
