Slovakia v Ireland Odds: Stalemate Expected in Vital Euro 2012 Group B Showdown

Following their disappointing 2-3 home defeat to Russia last week, the Republic of Ireland team must now travel to Zilina on Tuesday evening, to take on Slovakia in what is a vital Euro 2012 Group B qualifier. With the two teams both on six points from their opening two Group games a win for either would give them the ascendency in what is shaping up as a tough looking group. It is Slovakia however with odds of 5/4 from Paddy Power who have been made the favourites to win, with Ireland at 23/10 and the draw at 11/5.

Ireland would have been hoping to come into this match as the only unbeaten Group B team, but their inability to defend at the highest level was found out at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin last week, where they found themselves 0-3 down to Russia just five minutes into the second half. It was only their late comeback, with goals from Robbie Keane and Shane Long that saved the blushes, but the defeat also meant that Russia, who have already lost to Slovakia join the Ireland and Slovakia teams at the top of Group B.

Ireland coach, Giovanni Trapattoni is likely to start with just Robbie Keane up front for this match in a bid to control the game with a five man midfield, this will mean that chances will be few and far between, but it also means that should Ireland grab a goal then ‘Keano’ is the most likely to score it. Paddy Power Bookmakers in fact have made Keane the 6/1 co favourite to score the opening goal and also have him a 21/10 to score at anytime during the match. Long, who will almost certainly start on the bench, is next best in the betting to score at anytime for Ireland with a best price of 7/2. Ireland unfortunately will not have the services of Kevin Doyle for this match who has been ruled out with injury.

Neither side have been breaking any records in the goal scoring stakes over recent times, which suggests that this match might well have only a goal or two in it. The Under 2.5 market therefore might have some appeal even though the odds of 4/7 are on the skinny side. The braver punter might in fact prefer to take a chance on the Under 1-5 goals market, where there is much better value at 7/4.

Slovakia will almost certainly attempt to step up their marksmanship skills and play a three man attack. Coach, Vladimir Weiss, has hinted that he will start with his son, Vladimir Weiss junior, Miroslav Stoch and Stanislav Sestak up front in a bid to exploit the Irish defensive frailties that were evident against Russia. Sestak has odds of 6/1 to open the scoring, but probably a better bet would be on Stoch, who has looked in great from lately and has better value odds of 8/1 available from paddypower to break the deadlock.

This is a difficult game to call, with both sides desperate not to lose. Although Ireland looked weak defensively against Russia, punters can expect them to redress that situation as they are normally are a very hard team to score against. Although it is almost certain that Slovakia will try to make the most of home advantage, by being aggressive, they are not a prolific goalscoring team and showed themselves to also be weak defensively in their shock defeat last week at the hands of Armenia. We believe therefore that the draw would be the best betting option for this match and we would not be surprised to see the game end goalless at the end of the 90 minutes. A 0-0 draw can be backed at 13/2 with PaddyPower.
