Now that the ‘dust has settled’ at Villa Park, following Martin O‘Neill’s shock departure a more serious look can be undertaken as to who will become the next Aston Villa manager.
The Bookmakers of course love this type of situation knowing that the ‘Next Manager’ markets are always very buoyant and plenty of money can be made. Already they are reporting plenty of betting with lots of money being laid on the new favourite in the market, Bob Bradley, who is now as short as 9/4 with some but 11/4 is still available from Betfred. Bradley is currently team coach of the USA where he has acquitted himself with only meagre player resources. He has a clear understanding of the game and is a highly regarded football strategist, but his experience at club level is extremely limited and his experience in the hustle and bustle of the Premier League is non-existent. Nonetheless it appears that the Aston Villa American dominated board are interested but they know that they will have to act quickly in order to settle the squad.

Others potential candidates who are catching the ‘eye’ in the betting market is Sven Goran Eriksson who has expressed his interest to the club already. Eriksson is a 9/2 shot with betfred to get the job and there is also Martin Jol, of Ajax, although he appears committed to his current club. Jol had initially accepted the offer of the vacant managers job at Fulham before Ajax changed his mind with the offer of a better contract and a greater budget – it is hard to see him upset the Ajax Board a second time so early in the season. At 8/1 we would leave him alone, but we would consider taking the 7/1 about Jurgen Klinsmann getting the job. He would be a popular choice by and large and although he has no history with Villa, he does understand the Premier league and he is a superb coach and would be well respected by the players.

Alan Curbishley, who tends to get linked to every manager vacancy that crops up would also, in the case of Villa, be a very viable contender. He has met with considerable success in relative terms, down the years in the Premier League and is a very well respected manager. He was once being seriously considered to replace Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United and although that now looks unlikely the manager’s job at Villa would be an ideal alternative. Curbishley is well worth considering at 10/1 in the betting with Betfred.com
11/4 Bob Bradley
9/2 Sven Goran Eriksson
7/1 Jurgen Klinsmann
7/1 Gareth Southgate
8/1 Martin Jol
10/1 Alan Curbishley
