Man Utd v Man City Betting: Reds odds on favourites for crucial Manchester derby

Rarely can a Manchester derby have carried as much importance as Saturday lunchtime's at Old Trafford as Manchester City cling on to their bitter rivals' coattails at the top of the table in search of their first league title since 1968. A win for United would open up an 8 point lead over City and William Hill make that result favourite at an industry best 4/5 in the betting, while City are 4/1 to secure only their second win at Old Trafford in 27 attempts. The draw can be backed at 9/4.

Man United's 24 (30 including last season) game unbeaten run in the Premier League came to a halt at the hands of Wolves last weekend and there are further difficulties this weekend as Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans are out, although that could be a blessing in disguise following the latter's recent displays, and Darren Fletcher is a doubt. But Sir Alex Ferguson's men will be able to call on their formidable home record at Old Trafford and that gives them the edge against City.

They have gained 37 out of a possible 39 points at home, scoring 37 and conceding just 8 in the process. They have scored in every match at Old Trafford this term and are unbeaten in 10 months at the 'Theatre of Dreams'. City, well placed in the chase for a top four spot, have failed to score in four of the last five at United and a home clean sheet can be backed at 21/20 in the betting with Hills. Rooney continues to flatter to deceive and we fancy the look of Nani to score first at 8/1 on Saturday and it is interesting that he has scored six of his eight league goals at Old Trafford. Alternatively Hills offer the wincast of Nani to score anytime and Man Utd to win as a tempting 4/1 bet.

United's last four games may have each involved over 2.5 goals but we fancy Roberto Mancini, true to his Italian style, will set up City to defend and stifle their hosts as they did in the soporific 0-0 draw at Eastlands earlier this season and under 2.5 goals in this match is 8/11 on. City come off the high of the 3-0 win over West Brom last weekend, where former red Carlos Tevez scored a hat trick.

It is difficult to look anywhere else for a City goalscorer as Tevez has four goals in his last six against his old team and he is 11/2 to score first with William Hill.com or 6/4 to score anytime. City have doubts over the fitness of Mario Balotelli, Nigel de Jong and Micah Richards this weekend.

City may have the second best away record in the division but United could just edge this one with the United win by one goal available at 12/5 with Hills. It is difficult to see it being a repeat of last season's 4-3 thriller when Michael Owen scored a 96th minute winner, and a 1-0 United win is 11/2 or the 0-0 is a nicely priced 9/1.
