Ghana Tipped For Glory At The 2017 Africa Cup Of Nations

The 2017 Africa Cup of Nations gets underway on Saturday and it promises to be another hugely competitive three weeks of action, with Ghana our tip to go all the way to the final on 5th February...

DR Congo (each way) @ 28 / 1

The Hosts

This year's tournament will be held in Gabon and the hosts look a very skinny price in the outright market (10/1), although they will be powered by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and the Borussia Dortmund striker will be hoping to fill his boots against Group A opponents Burkina Faso, Cameroon and Guinea-Bissau.

However, goals are increasingly going out of fashion at major tournaments and siding with under 2.5 goals could prove to be a prudent move when the matches get underway.
Average Goals Per Game At The AFCON:

  • 2008 - 3.09 goals per game
  • 2010 - 2.45 goals per game
  • 2012 - 2.38 goals per game
  • 2013 - 2.16 goals per game
  • 2015 - 2.13 goals per game

The Favourites

It is Ivory Coast who are favourites for this year's tournament as the defending champions ended years of hurt by landing the title in 2015. It was their second success after claiming their maiden crown at the 1992 tournament and they have now reached at least the quarter-finals during each of their past six appearances at the AFCON.

However, they weren't overly impressive in qualifying for this year's tournament and, shorn of the influential Yaya Toure, they look a tad short (4/1 with Betfair) as they are in a Group C that includes a depleted Morocco, an ageing Togo and potential surprise package DR Congo.

If anyone is to upset the odds in a similar manner to which Zambia managed in 2012 then DR Congo could be worth a look as they should get through the group and their harmonious team spirit ensures they offer value at 28/1 (Sky Bet).

The Top Tip

The top-two from Group C will go through to meet opponents from a Group D that includes Mali, Egypt and Uganda.

Egypt (9/1 with Paddy Power) are seven-time winners and have been in decent form going into their first AFCON since claiming the last of three titles in a row in 2010.

It is Ghana who are our pick though as a youthful side have the experienced pairing of Andre Ayew and Asamoah Gyan leading the line. The pair are proven at international level and Ghana have a fine pedigree at the Africa Cup of Nations, winning four times, albeit their last title came in 1982.

Ghana have reached at least the semi-finals in each of the past five years (3rd - 2nd - 4th - 4th - 2nd) and they look nicely priced at 9/1 (Paddy Power).

Group B

Finally, Senegal are 6/1 with Bet Victor but they have crashed out of the group stages in each of their past three appearances and they are in Group B with 2015 quarter-finalists Algeria (8/1), as well as Tunisia and Zimbabwe.
