Swiss Are On A Roll And Can End Northern Ireland's World Cup Qualification Hopes

Northern Ireland were left fuming by a shocking penalty decision as they slumped to a 1-0 defeat to Switzerland in the first leg of their 2018 World Cup play-off and they face an uphill task in the second leg at St Jakob's Park in Basel on Sunday evening...

  • Northern Ireland have lost three matches in a row
  • Switzerland are unbeaten in World Cup qualifiers at home since 2008 - Won Eleven, Drawn Three
  • The Swiss kept 10 clean sheets in their past 14 World Cup qualifiers on home soil

Swiss On A Roll

Michael O'Neill was stunned by the penalty decision at Windsor Park but he can have few complaints about the result as Switzerland were utterly dominant for much of the match and they will be looking to get the job done at St Jakob's Park, where they have only lost one of seventeen matches since 2001.

The hosts are 4/7 to win on Sunday (Paddy Power) and they do tend to be very strong on home soil, where they are unbeaten in World Cup qualifiers since 2008 (won eleven, drawn three). They have kept ten clean sheets in their past fourteen at home and the Switzerland win to nil can be backed at 6/5 (PaddyPower.com).
Match Odds:

Anyway Back For Northern Ireland?

Northern Ireland failed to score in three of their five away World Cup qualifiers during the group campaign, only scoring against lowly Azerbaijan and San Marino, and it doesn't bode well that they didn't manage a single shot on target in the first leg of this tie against Switzerland at Windsor Park on Thursday night.

Their hopes of reaching a first World Cup finals since 1986 look slim at this point and their cause isn't helped by the fact that Corry Evans is suspended following his controversial yellow card in the first game, while Stuart Dallas is a major injury doubt.

It doesn't bode well that they have now lost three in a row and we fancy they will come up short in a match that could see tempers flare. Northern Ireland will still be raging about the controversial decisions from the first leg but Switzerland's greater quality will prove to be the difference in Basel, where the home team are 13/8 to cover a -1 goal handicap (Paddy Power bookmakers).
