Republic Of Ireland To Defy The Odds By Earning A Positive Result In Denmark

Denmark are odds-on for the first leg of their 2018 World Cup play-off against Republic of Ireland on Saturday night but we fancy Martin O'Neill's men are decent value to come away from Copenhagen with a positive result...

  • Denmark failed to beat Montenegro and Romania at home during World Cup qualifying
  • Republic of Ireland went unbeaten in away World Cup qualifiers - Won Three, Drew Two
  • Ireland are unbeaten in four meetings with Denmark - Won Two, Drawn Two

Tips The Draw    Best Bet @ 13 / 5

How They Got Here

Denmark are 3/4 for the win at Telia Parken but that is a very short price for a team that finished runners up to Poland in Group E and they were far from convincing on home soil, losing to Montenegro and drawing with Romania.

The Danes are without Simon Kjaer and Henrik Dalsgaard ahead of the match, while Nicolai Jorgenson is a major injury doubt, which means Nicklas Bendtner could get the chance to impress.

Bendtner, who played for Martin O'Neill at Sunderland, is 5/1 to be first goalscorer (Bet 365) after notching 18 goals in 25 Eliteserien appearances for Rosenborg this term and it would be 'peak Ireland' to lose out to a goal from the much-maligned striker.

However, the Irish proved to be stubborn opposition during qualifying as they finished runners up to Serbia in Group D after losing only one of their games. In fact, they went unbeaten on the road (won three, drew two) and they are 19/4 for the win or a best price 13/5 to draw this weekend.
Match Odds:

Head-To-Head

They are a tough nut to crack as they bid to reach the finals of a World Cup for the first time since 2002 and they will be looking to erase memories of Thierry Henry's infamous handball goal when they lost to France in a play-off for the 2008 tournament.

O'Neill can take heart from the fact Ireland are unbeaten in four clashes with Denmark, winning the past two 3-0 and 4-0 respectively, and they are 7/6 to win or draw in the 'double chance' market (Unibet).

The Ireland manager has said that his team has to score on Saturday so both teams to score (6/5) could be worth a look, as could the score draw (4/1 with Paddy Power), although it is the draw which is the pick of the match bets for us.
