Wales v Norway Betting: Low Score Draw at Good Odds Looks Best Bet

This ‘friendly’ fixture between Wales and Norway on Saturday afternoon at the Millennium Stadium could turn out to be a very good game, with both sides looking to continue their recent good form. Norway who narrowly failed to make the play-offs for Euro 2012 have been made the 6/4 favourites in the betting to win this match with Wales at 13/8 and the draw 23/10; these odds are available from Paddy Power.

Norway of course have made rapid progress under Head Coach, Egil Olsen who is in his second stint at Norway’s helm after guiding them to the World Cup finals in both 1994 and 1998. He can consider himself hugely unlucky not to get his team to Poland/Ukraine next June after Norway finished level on 16 points with second placed Portugal but they had to settle for third place with an inferior goal difference. Nonetheless Olsen has taken them from 59 in the FIFA Rankings up to a far more respectable 24th place and a win here on Saturday would see them go even higher. In the 21 matches played since Olsen took over in January 2009, Norway have won 14, drawn 2 with only 5 defeats and come to the match on the back of a 3-1 over Cyprus last month.

Wales meanwhile have suddenly sparked under new boss, Gary Speed, who has been ‘in the chair’ since last December. Wins in three of their last four matches, including an excellent 1-0 away against Bulgaria last month have halted a poor run of form in 2011, and the general feeling within the side now is that they can qualify for the 2014 World Cup.

Speed knows that he has a well motivated squad of players with a great blend of youth and experience and has a couple of players, Aaron Ramsey and Gareth Bale who would not be far off world class. Add players of the calibre of Craig Bellamy and James Collins to the mix and it becomes easy to see why there is plenty of optimism in the Welsh camp these days.

Ramsey and Bale have both netted five times so far for their country, and both would have decent chances to break the deadlock on Saturday. Bale is currently an 8/1 chance and Ramsey 10/1 in the First Goalscorer Betting market, however it is Bellamy who is attracting most betting support to be first goalscorer with odds of 13/2 from paddy power.

As far as the head to head encounters are concerned it is Wales who have the advantage; in the five most recent matches, they have won twice to Norway’s once, while the other two games were drawn. The most recent of those matches came in February 2008, which Wales won by 3-0, which would be exactly the outcome that Speed would be looking for in this match. Paddy Power Bookmakers in fact are offering 30/1 in the correct score betting market for this outcome but possibly a far more realistic outcome would be a draw as it clear that both teams have plenty to offer and neither will be easy to beat.

A 1-1 sounds about right for a match like this and it would be no surprise either to see Norway striker John Carew grab the goal for his now adopted country.
