Scotland face the unenviable prospect of travelling to European and world champions Spain in need of a win to be sure of second place in Group I as they bid to qualify for Euro 2012. Spain are hot favourites to win Tuesday's match at 1/5 on in the betting with William Hill, while Scotland are a massive 16/1 to cause an upset, with the draw priced 5/1.
Craig Levein's side are currently second in Group I, just a point ahead of Czech Republic, who travel to Lithuania on Tuesday night. As a result Scotland could well be relying on Lithuania to do them a favour if they are to make the play-offs for Euro 2012.
It doesn't get much tougher than a visit to the Jose Rico Perez Stadium in Alicante as Spain are unbeaten on home soil in nearly five years, with their last defeat coming back in November 2006. They have dominated Group I in the meantime, winning all seven of their matches and they are ten points clear at the top of table.
Having already qualified, the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Andres Iniesta are likely to be rested, although Raul Albiol is out injured and Sergio Ramos and Xabi Alonso are doubts. Even without those star names there is plenty of attacking class in this Spanish side.
Barcelona striker David Villa is 9/4 favourite in the first goalscorer betting with Hills after notching eight goals in thirteen appearances for club and country this season, while Fernando Torres has shown signs of returning to his best and he could be worth a look at 5/2 to score first.
Goals certainly look to be the order of the day for Spain as seven of their last eight matches have involved over 2.5 goals, with over 2.5 this week 1/2 on, while for a bit more value a look at over 3.5 could be worth a punt at 11/8 with WilliamHill.com.
Scotland don't have such an embarrassment of riches to call upon and scoring goals could be a problem this week as doubts surround Craig Mackail-Smith and Kenny Miller. Mackail-Smith has scored six goals for Brighton this term and scored the Scots' winner against Liechtenstein at the weekend but he is a major doubt, while fellow striker Kenny Miller faces a race against time to be fit.
It leaves Levein with few options up front and it is no surprise that a Spanish clean sheet is priced 4/9 on by Hills, with the win to nil 7/10 on.
Levein's side may be unbeaten in their last three outings but injuries could leave them well short of quality when they come up against the mighty Spaniards, not least with Barry Bannan, Charlie Adam and Phil Bardsley all doubtful.
It is difficult to see Scotland upsetting this Spanish side and the correct score of 3-0 to Spain looks tempting at 11/2, and it would be a result that leaves Scotland relying on Lithuania to do them a favour against Czech Republic.
