On Saturday, Claude Puel's side had to settle for a 2-2 draw against Norwich at Carrow Road and a day later Liverpool couldn't find a way past League Two Plymouth at Anfield.
Neither side would have wanted a replay at this congested stage of the season especially with a two-legged semi final on the horizon.
Jurgen Klopp's men are favourites to qualify for the final but Southampton have already claimed a major scalp in this competition by beating Arsenal 2-0 at the Emirates back in November. There is a suggestion that Klopp will be looking to keep things tight at St Mary's ahead of the second leg at Anfield.
Southampton have had to cope without their main striker Charlie Austin who is out injured and they will now make do without Sofaine Boufal who is on African Cup of Nations duty. Their skipper Jose Fonte is also unlikely to figure after he handed in a transfer request last week. Sofiane Boufal is away with Morocco at the African Cup of Nations. However they have a good home record and the visit of Liverpool will not faze them.
It will be a much-changed line-up from Klopp with many of his big names returning to the starting XI following the FA Cup stalemate with Plymouth. Liverpool have injury doubts over several players including Jordan Henderson and Phillipe Coutinho.
Liverpool are unbeaten in their last seven games since that memorable 4-3 defeat at Bournemouth while Southampton are without a win since December 18 when they won 3-1 coincidentally at Bournemouth. Since then they have been beaten in the Premier League by Spurs (4-1), West Brom (2-1) and Everton (3-0) and on Saturday they were held to a 2-2 draw in a third round FA Cup tie at Norwich.
After a run of four wins, Liverpool have drawn their last two against Sunderland (2-2) and Plymouth (0-0). Their last win was against Manchester City on New Year's Eve. The Reds have have lost just twice on their travels this season – at Burnley and Bournemouth.
Liverpool and Southampton last met on November 19 in the Premier League when it ended 0-0 at St Mary's. The last time Southampton beat Liverpool in March, a 3-2 Premier League success.
The sides met in the Capital One Cup in 2015 when Liverpool won 6-1 at St Mary's with Divock Origi scoring a hat-trick. Daniel Sturridge scored two while Jordon Ibe also scored after Sadio Mane gave the Saints a first minute lead.
Southampton v Liverpool Match Betting Odds
The home side can be backed at 13/5 with Bet365 while Liverpool are 5/4. A draw is available at 5/2. In the both teams to score market, yes is 3/4 while no is evens. I am going for both teams to score here and a Liverpool win at 17/5 with Coral.
Southampton v Liverpool First Goalscorer Odds
Daniel Sturridge leads the market at 5/1 with SkyBet with Divock Origi close behind at 6/1. Virgil van Dijk has popped up with a few goals in recent weeks and at 22/1 may attract some interest.
