Man City v Liverpool Betting: Blues favourites to win semi final first leg

Manchester City and Liverpool will meet once again in the live Wednesday night match as they go head-to-head in the first leg of their Carling Cup semi-final tie at the Etihad. City were comfortable winners when the two sides met in the league last week and they are 19/20 favourites in the match betting with William Hill, while Liverpool are 3/1 and the draw is 23/10.

Liverpool went down 3-0 last Tuesday night and another thumping defeat would be disastrous as they bid to win the League Cup for the eighth time. The Reds are 5/4 to qualify for the final and they will want to take a positive result back to Anfield with them, with City 4/7 on to qualify.

Kenny Dalglish's side will be boosted by City's absentees as Yaya and Kolo Toure are at the African Cup of Nations, while Vincent Kompany is suspended after his red card in City's 3-2 defeat to Man Utd in the FA Cup. Incidentally, discipline has been a problem for City of late as the last two Man City v Liverpool matches have involved red cards and Hills go 9/2 for a sending off in Wednesday's match.

City's loss against Man United was their first home defeat of the season and it as in keeping with the glut of goals the Etihad has witnessed lately. City have scored three goals or more in six of their last eight domestic matches at home and over 2.5 goals is 21/20 this week. However, Liverpool will no doubt look to keep it tight as they bid to ensure they have something to play for in the second leg at Anfield, with under 2.5 goals 7/10 on and Hills offering 11/4 for Man City to win and under 2.5 goals in the match.

City have only failed to score once in their last 21 League Cup matches though and Edin Dzeko could get a chance to impress with Sergio Aguero likely to be rested. Dzeko has failed to score in his last ten matches but he has scored four in four domestic cup matches this term and can be backed at 5/1 in the first goalscorer betting.

Meanwhile, Liverpool 's Andy Carroll ended a ten match goal drought of his own by scoring in the 5-1 win over Oldham on Friday night and he is 8/1 to be first goalscorer with WilliamHill.com. Carroll is likely to get an extended run in the team with Luis Suarez suspended and will be keen to justify his huge price tag.

Liverpool have scored nine goals in four Carling Cup matches this season and both teams to score can be backed at 10/11. Seven of those nine came in the second half of games and it could be worth backing the second half to be the highest scoring half this week at 23/20 with Hills, particularly as City have scored 38 of their 56 league goals in the second period.

We fancy City to edge this first leg and they can be backed at 5/2 to win by one goal, although Liverpool will fancy their chances of reaching the final if they can take a decent result back to Anfield as City have failed to win on their last nine visits to Liverpool.
