Scotland travel to a warmer climate this week for a well intentioned ‘friendly’ encounter against Cyprus, a team who have been beaten in their last four games and who are ranked 120th in the FIFA rankings. Scotland therefore, who have been improving all the time under manager, Craig Levein, should make this a winning visit and have odds of 6/5 on offer from Bet365 to do exactly that, while Cyprus and the draw are both quoted at 23/10.
What Scotland expect to get out of such a match is hard to tell, but at least it gives Levein an opportunity to try out a few new players and as such he has called up a number of uncapped youngsters including several from England’s lower divisions.
Levein however will be missing a few ‘mainstays’ such as Scott Brown of Celtic and Steven Naismith of Rangers, who are both out injured, but he will still have the likes of Darren Fletcher, Gary Caldwell and Kenny Miller to call upon to provide the team with a strong backbone.
Apart from their recent 1-3 defeat against European and World Champions, Spain, the record of the Scots in their recent internationals is a good one, which includes wins over Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Denmark, Wales and N Ireland. They also earned themselves a decent 2-2 draw with the Czech Republic all in their last nine matches. That draw of course meant that they could not qualify for Euro 2012 but at least is demonstrated that the team is heading in the right direction and a win in Nicosia this week would go a long way in confirming that.
All that said Cyprus are not a bad team and boast a number of players from the APOEL Club who are the current league champions of Cyprus and who are acquitting themselves extremely well in this year’s Champions League. The Cyprus squad also includes the AC Omonia striker, Dimitris Christofi, one of the most highly rated players in Cyprus who scores regularly and who would be a more than reasonable bet to score at anytime in this match with odds currently of 7/2 with bet365.
As far as the first goalscorer in the match is concerned, then it is Kenny Miller who is the favourite with odds of 9/2. Miller has scored 15 goals for Scotland in 57 internationals and last scored for his country in the 2-2 draw against the ‘Czechs’ in October. He has also proven that his form is currently very good with five goals already from fourteen appearances for his new club, Cardiff City in the Championship. Others being backed in this market include Craig Mackail-Smith at 11/2, while David Goodwillie and potential new cap, Jordan Rhodes of Huddersfield Town are both at 13/2.
In overall terms this should be an entertaining match which could produce a few goals. Scotland are playing with plenty of momentum these days and should be good enough to come out on top with an anticipated score-line of around 3-1; a scoreline which incidentally cab be backed with attractive odds of 20/1
