Wales will look to revive their recent fortunes when they take on Australia in an international friendly at Cardiff City Stadium on Wednesday evening. The Welsh are now 112th in the latest world rankings and they are available at 2/1 in the match betting with Boylesports this week, although Australia will be no pushovers at 5/4, while the draw is priced 9/4.
Gary Speed's side dropped below even the Faroe Islands in the world rankings recently and the new manager has yet to have an effect since taking over a troubled squad from John Toshack. A sign of how far Wales have fallen was highlighted when they were put in the bottom group of seeds for the recent World Cup draw and it is questionable whether things will get any better.
Speed did manage to halt a run of six successive defeats with a win over Northern Ireland last time out and it was only Wales' second win since the start of 2010 - the previous one came against Luxembourg.
Despite their recent woes, Robert Earnshaw has managed to score two goals in his last two international appearances and he is available at 13/2 in the first goalscorer betting with Boyles. However, they will have to do without the services of James Collins, Sam Vokes and Andrew Crofts this week and they come up against a tough Australian outfit.
Wales have failed to score in four of their last seven matches and Australia are renowned for their defensive strength lately. Holger Osieck's side have kept eight clean sheets in their last ten matches and have conceded just three in that time, so under 2.5 goals could be a decent bet at 8/13. Meanwhile, the Australia win with a clean sheet can be backed at 5/2 in the betting and that could be well worth a look with Boylesports.com.
Australia are ranked 23rd in the world now and they have been in fine form of late, losing just one match in their last nine. That sole defeat came in the final of the Asia Cup against Japan in January and since then they have beaten Germany 2-1 in their own backyard and they drew 0-0 with a decent Serbia outfit.
They can boast an array of household names, although Harry Kewell has been left out for being "unfit" after being released by Galatasaray. Tim Cahill is in the squad for the first time since the Asia Cup though and the attacking midfielder is 11/2 favourite to be first scorer. He managed nine goals during an injury-plagued Premier League season last year and his international record is excellent as he has 23 goals from 52 appearances.
One man to possibly avoid in the goalscoring markets could be Middlesbrough's Scott McDonald (13/2) as he has failed to score in 24 international appearances so far.
Even with McDonald's troubles in front of goal, Australia look as though they could have the beating off this Wales side and the correct score of 2-0 at 9/1 could provide a healthy return.
