There has been very little for England fans to cheer about during the 2010 World Cup and the news that Howard Webb is to referee the World Cup final is the last chance for any Englishman celebrate the achievements of his fellow countrymen in South Africa. Whilst it's not quite the English success we envisaged four weeks ago, it still merits a congratulations to Howard Webb, who will become the first English official to referee a World Cup final since John Taylor oversaw the match between Germany and Holland in the 1974 final.
There is a certain sense of irony about lauding Webb's achievement given football fans normally do nothing but criticise and moan about the standard of refereeing. However, for one night only, it would appear that all is forgiven and Mr Webb will be representing England where Capello and his squad miserably failed on football's biggest stage at Soccer City in Johannesburg on Sunday night.
Bookmakers have been the first to jump on the bandwagon of Webb's success by offering a variety of odds and betting opportunities on the decisions Webb will have a major say in during the Spain v Holland match. The most obvious of which is whether there will be a sending off in the match. Both Paddy Power and Victor Chandler Offer odds of 3/1 that Webb will brandish a red card at some stage in the game, which would make him only the third World Cup final referee ever to dismiss a player.
William Hill are betting on the total number of cards that will be shown in the match, offering 21/10 between 4-6, seven or more 9/2 and three card or less is the 11/8 favourite. So far in the three matches that he has refereed in South Africa, he has shown a total of 17 cards, which suggests he won't take any messing from the Spain or Holland players but he has not sent a player off in his last 26 games.
Several bookies are offering odds on who will be the first player that Howard Webb books will be. Holland's Mark Van Bommel is the clear favourite at 13/2 with Paddy Power and has managed to gain himslef a reputation during the torunament for being dirty but has only been booked once in six games. Paddy Power are even offering odds on the number of fouls Van Bommel will commit during the match with none an 8/1 chance and more than six 5/1 and is 16/1 to be sent off.
Excitement for English based neutrals watching the World Cup final may come in the form of hoping for some controversial refereeing decisions but in a game that promises to be a thriller with both teams evenly poised, we hope Howard Webb has a quiet game and that the football does the talking.

No 2/9
Total Cards shown (William Hill)
