PSV v Rangers Odds: Eindhoven hot favourites in the betting for first leg clash

Rangers face a daunting trip to the Philip Stadium on Thursday night when they take on Dutch league leaders PSV Eindhoven in the first leg of their last sixteen Europa League tie. PSV are odds on favourites with Totesport bookmakers as they go in at an industry best of 1/2, while Rangers are an outside 6/1 bet and the draw is priced 3/1.

The Scottish side scraped through to the last sixteen with a last gasp Maurice Edu goal that earned them a 2-2 draw and an away goals win against a poor Sporting Lisbon side. Since that result much of the talk on Glasgow has been about the unsavoury scenes that marred their 1-0 loss to Celtic in the Scottish Cup last week, and they continued to hang onto the coattails of Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premier League with a 1-0 win over St Mirren at the weekend.

Booking a place in the quarter-finals of the Europa League looks a difficult task as they have failed to win away from home in ten attempts in Europe and are without a win in six in European competition. Walter Smith will be hoping David Healy can add to his only goal for the club with injuries decimating his squad and Healy can be backed as first goalscorer at odds of 9/1 or as an anytime scorer at 11/4 with Tote.

Rangers are also without a win in three against Dutch opposition and must do without the services of Lee McCulloch, Sasa Papac, Kirk Broadfoot, Steven Naismith, Jamie Ness and crucially the cup tied Nikica Jelavic. Losing such goalscoring power doesn't bode well ahead of a trip to PSV, who conceded just three in the Europa League group stages, and a PSV clean sheet could be worth backing at odds of 21/20 with Tote.

The Dutch side boast an unbeaten record in 11 home matches in Europe, stretching back to December 2008, and are unbeaten in nine in the Europa League. They progressed to the last sixteen with a 5-3 aggregate win over Lille and boast an array of attacking talent. Hungarian Balazs Dzsudzsak has scored six in his last five appearances, including the winner against Excelsior at the weekend which ensured they remain top of the Dutch Eredivisie, and has 18 goals to his name for the season.

Dzsudzsak looks good value as a first goalscorer at odds of 5/1 with Totesport.com on Thursday and could be the way to go. PSV have failed to beat Rangers in four attempts and have never beaten a Scottish side in six attempts, but looking at the varying fortunes of the two sides this year we fancy that record could come to an end this week.

The double result of a half time and full time PSV win can be backed at odds of 6/5, while the PSV win to nil is a 5/4 punt. It terms of a scoreline the 2-0 win looks tempting at odds of 5/1 with Tote and Rangers will be hoping that isn't the case as it could well be fatal to their hopes of silverware this season.
