Manchester City have been installed as 6/1 favourites to win the Europa League this season after they dropped out of the Champions League on Wednesday night. Their near neighbours and bitter rivals Manchester United joined them in a dismal night for the Manchester clubs, with William Hill pricing Sir Alex Ferguson's team 7/1.
City's drop down into the Europa League was expected as they needed Napoli to lose to Villarreal on Wednesday but the Italian side won through and Roberto Mancini's men must content themselves without Champions League football. It is a huge blow for City but you fancy they can concentrate their efforts on winning the Premier League this term, although they will do well not to underestimate the Europa League after they were knocked out by Dynamo Kiev last season.
United's inclusion in the Europa League was brought about by a stunning 2-1 defeat to FC Basel, which meant that they finished third in their group and failed to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League for only the third time in 17 years. It completes a miserable two weeks for United as they have won just one of their last five matches and crashed out to Crystal Palace in the Carling Cup last week.
The Europa League is the only major trophy Sir Alex Ferguson hasn't won with United and it could offer the only chance of silverware if City continue to dominate the Premier League.
Away from England's big two clubs, there is a strong Spanish presence at the head of the betting, with William Hill pricing 2010 winners Atletico Madrid 10/1. They were joined by their Spanish compatriots Valencia, who dropped out of the Champions League and they look tempting at 11/1 as they continue to impress in La Liga.
Defending champions Porto also dropped into the Europa League and they are a 14/1 punt to retain the trophy they won in Dublin last May. They don't look as strong as last season though and this season's competition looks stronger after the addition of the two Manchester sides.
Meanwhile, much is expected of big spending French side PSG, who are 20/1 with WilliamHill.com, although they are third in Group F currently and not guaranteed to qualify for the next round.
Tottenham also face an uphill task to qualify from their group and they are a big 40/1 in the betting with Hills, although Stoke and Fulham are well placed to qualify. Stoke have impressed in topping what is arguably the toughest group in the Europa League and they are 18/1 to win the tournament, while 2010 finalists Fulham are second in Group K and can be backed at 33/1 in the betting.
