Scotland v Northern Ireland Betting: Bookmakers' odds predict a Scottish win in the Nations Cup

Scotland play Northern Ireland on Wednesday night at the Aviva Stadium in Eire as they get their Nations Cup campaigns underway. The last meeting between these sides ended in a fiery draw but Scotland have the edge in the betting this time and are available at an industry best price of 13/10 with Totesport. Northern Ireland are a 21/10 bet and the draw is an industry best 23/10.

Both sides have suffered plenty of withdrawals from their original squads and it will come down to who copes best without their key players this week. The two sides drew 0-0 when they met in 2008, with Liam McGivern sent off for Northern Ireland and Alan McGregor saving a penalty. Similar excitement would be welcome on Wednesday but it is difficult to see many more goals being scored than there was two and half years ago, with Tote offering under 2.5 goals at 8/13.

Craig Levein's Scotland must do without Darren Fletcher, Graham Dorrans, Lee McCulloch and Gary Caldwell this week but Robert Snodgrass has received his first international call up. Snodgrass has been in sparkling form for Championship side Leeds this season, where he has made a name for himself as a goalscoring midfielder. Scotland have endured a mixed set of results of late as they beat Faroe Islands 3-0 last time out but lost out to Spain and Czech Republic. There was no disgrace in either of those defeats, despite the controversy over Levein's 4-6-0 formation against the Czechs, and they hold the edge for this week's clash we fancy.

Northern Ireland manager Nigel Worthington has plenty of injury concerns of his own as Aaron Hughes, Chris Brunt, Kyle Lafferty, Maik Taylor, Craig Cathcart and Sammy Clingan are all out. He does have David Healy to call on though and will be hoping his star striker's move to Rangers will have boosted his confidence. Northern Ireland's recent results have been good as they are unbeaten in last four, with draws against Italy, Faroe Islands, and Morocco, and a win against Slovenia. They have however struggled for goals as they have failed to score in five of their last eight and it doesn't bode well that they have conceded first in six of those eight. With that in mind the Scotland clean sheet could be worth a look at 9/5 with Tote on Wednesday, or a Scotland win to nil is an 11/4 bet.

Northern Ireland may be ranked higher than Scotland in the world rankings, 38 compared to 53, but we fancy a youthful Scotland side to continue to show they are an international team on the up. The 1-0 Scotland win is available at 5/1 in the betting with Tote as they look for a boost ahead of the resumption of their Euro 2012 qualifiers.
