Tottenham will bid to get their Europa League campaign up and running when they take on Maribor at White Hart Lane on Thursday night. Spurs are yet to hit the heights in Europe this season as they have drawn each of their opening three fixtures to sit third in Group J, although a win this week would be very welcome as they sit just two points behind group leaders Lazio.
The bookies certainly fancy Tottenham to get a first European win of the season under their belts as they are 2/7 odds on favourites for the match with Betfred, who price Maribor 9/1 and the draw 5/1. Tottenham's form in Europe will be a real worry as they have won just one of their last six European fixtures, as well as just two of their last seven at home.
They will have few better opportunities to improve that poor record though as Maribor have verged on being hopeless away from home, with the reigning Slovenian champions losing each of their last five European away games and they have only ever won one of 15 away fixtures in their history in European competition.
It looks to be an ideal opportunity for Spurs to get back on track after a 1-0 defeat to Wigan on Saturday left them with just one win in five in all competitions and in sixth place in the Premier League table. Andre Villas-Boas will be looking for a big response from his players this week and it appears unlikely he will rest too many star names for a competition he is taking very seriously.
Jermain Defoe is likely to get the chance to add to his seven goals for club and country this season and he is 10/3 favourite to score first with Fred, although for a touch more value it could be worth a look at the 20/1 on offer for a scorecast of Defoe to score first and Tottenham to win 2-0. Gylfi Sigurdsson will also get a chance to impress after he scored in Spurs' 1-1 draw against Maribor in Slovenia two weeks ago and he is a best price 6/1 to score first and 13/8 to score anytime.
Maribor will look to contain Tottenham on Thursday as they bid to reverse their own poor form which has seen them win just two of their last six in all competitions. They are still top of the Slovenian league and Marcos Tavares remains their main goal threat after scoring seven this season and he is 10/1 to score first.
Goals have hardly been a feature of Maribor's games though as six of their last seven have ended with under 2.5 goals. Five of Spurs' last seven have gone the same way and under 2.5 goals could be worth a look at 6/5 with Betfred as Tottenham look to pick up an important three points in Group J.
