Steve Lomas gets his reign as St Johnston manager underway against Aberdeen at McDiarmid Park on Monday night and his new side are favourites to give him a winning start. Ladbrokes price St Johnstone 5/4 for the win and that could be worth taking advantage of as they come up against an Aberdeen (11/5) side with a dismal away record in the SPL.
Lomas took over from Derek McInnes, who left for Bristol City, last week and he has the fortune of taking over a side that are in good shape. They are sitting in fourth place in the table, having picked up 19 points so far, and will be looking to improve an average home record.
Lomas has the added bonus of the strike partnership of Fran Sandaza and Cillian Sheridan at his disposal. Sandaza has scored eight goals this season and the Spaniard is 5/1 favourite to score first with Ladbrokes, while Sheridan has scored four in his last four appearances and is available at industry best priced odds of 6/1 to be first goalscorer.
Goals could be at a premium though as 83% of St Johnston's home games have involved under 2.5 goals. Furthermore, each of the last six meetings between St Johnstone and Aberdeen have ended with under 2.5 goals, and under 2.5 this week is 4/6 on.
Meanwhile, Aberdeen have failed to score in five of their last six away matches this season and at least one team has failed to score in the last five meetings between these two sides. We fancy the look of St Johnstone to keep a clean sheet on Monday, with Ladbrokes.com offering 2/1 for them to keep Aberdeen out.
Lomas must do without Sam Parkin this week, while Jamie Adams is a doubt, but he can call upon the fit again Frazer Wright.
Aberdeen have selection problems of their own as Rob Milson is likely to be out, while Scott Vernon and Peter Pawlett are doubts. Vernon in particular would be a huge loss as he has scored four goals this season and is 11/2 to score first.
However, all four of Vernon's goals have come at home and he mirrors Aberdeen's problems this season. They are unbeaten in six matches at home but have picked up just one point from a possible eighteen on their travels.
It is a run of form that leaves them precariously placed in eleventh in the SPL and their away record is the worst in the division. They have been blighted by ill discipline in recent games as well, with Rory Fallon and Ryan Jack both suspended after picking up red cards in the last two games, with Ladbrokes offering a tempting 10/3 for a red card on Monday.
It is tough to see Aberdeen reversing their wretched away form and we fancy St Johnstone to secure a narrow win, with the correct score of 1-0 to the home side available at 7/1.
