Manchester City And United Tipped To Fight It Out For The 2018 Premier League Title

A new Premier League season is almost upon us and it is Manchester City who are the bookmakers' favourites as they go into the new campaign with only a bit of loose change to show from their £200m exploits in the summer transfer window. Can the new signings be the difference for Pep Guardiola? We take a look in our 2017/18 Premier League Preview...

Manchester City

The 15/8 favourites (Paddy Power) finished third last season, a full fifteen points behind champions Chelsea, and Guardiola has moved quickly to improve a woeful defence by spending £156.2m on defensively-minded players, with goalkeeper Ederson coming in to replace the hapless Claudio Bravo and full-backs Kyle Walker and Benjamin Mendy have also joined.

Utility man Danilo could prove to be an inspired addition as City bid to add to the Premier League crowns they won in 2012 and 2014, and it is difficult to see a side with the fire-power of Leroy Sane, Sergio Aguero, Gabriel Jesus and Kevin De Bruyne not being in the mix for the title. They are capable of blowing teams away and they are a shoe-in for a top-two finish... But who will be battling them for the crown come May?

Chelsea

No team has successfully defended the Premier League title since Manchester United in 2009 and we wonder if the added distraction of the Champions League might take its toll on Antonio Conte's squad. Diego Costa has been frozen out, Nemanja Matic has departed and Eden Hazard is struggling with injury going into the new campaign and Conte desperately needs new signing Alvaro Morata to hit the ground running.

Morata still needs time to find fitness though and Chelsea could well be playing catch-up, with Paddy Power pricing them 7/2 for a successful title defence.

Manchester United

Manchester United haven't won the Premier League since 2013 but Jose Mourinho is a dab hand at delivering titles during his second season at a club. Indeed, the Portuguese has won the domestic league in the second season during each of his past five stints as manager (at Porto, Chelsea (twice), Inter Milan and Real Madrid), while each of his last two jobs have seen him fail to win the league in his first season but follow up to take the spoils the next year.

United (4/1) look well equipped to bully teams as only Tottenham conceded less (26) than United's 29 goals last term and a team that kept 17 clean sheets in the league in 2016/17 has the defensive solidity to mount a serious challenge this time.

It was scoring goals that was a problem but Romelu Lukaku arrives with a fine domestic record and they are still chasing Ivan Perisic. Following a difficult first season in England, expect Paul Pogba to flourish alongside Nemanja Matic and we fancy the title race could be all about the Manchester clubs.

Pep v Jose. City v United. We'll back the pair of them to finish in the top-two in any order with a 4/1 'dual forecast' with Bet Victor.

Tottenham

Unlike the aforementioned clubs, Tottenham (10/1 with Betfred) have been frustrated in the transfer market so far this summer and that is a major concern after they went so close to winning the league during the previous two seasons.

At a time when they should be looking to kick on, Spurs are stagnating and this could well be a 'gap year' for them as they will have to endure a season of playing at their unfavoured venue of Wembley Stadium before moving into their brand spanking new White Hart Lane home next year.

As with anyone who loses another to a 'gap year', the worry for Tottenham fans is that their beloved Harry Kane, Dele Alli et al. find better, more tanned lovers elsewhere during the next twelve months...

Liverpool

Like Tottenham, Liverpool (12/1) have endured a quiet and quite frankly embarrassing time of it in the transfer market. An ill-advised attempt at tapping up Virgil van Dijk left the Reds with egg on their face earlier this summer and only Mo Salah has arrived.

Philippe Coutinho appears likely to make a move to La Liga before August is out and it is difficult to see them improving on last year's fourth place finish unless they make some major moves in the transfer market during the next few weeks.

Arsenal

Finally, Arsenal finished outside of the top-four for the first time in twenty years but expect them to bounce back from that low, albeit a crack at the league title seems unlikely. It will be interesting to see how Alexander Lacazette settles in England and they still look short of a genuine engine and leader in the middle of the park.

Fans will do well not to get over-excited by beating Chelsea in the Community Shield as United were the last Community Shield winners to go on to claim that season's Premier League title back in 2010/11.
