Brazil v Germany Odds: Betting is tight for World Cup semi final clash

The first of the 2014 World Cup semi-finals takes place at the Estadio Mineirao in Belo Horizonte on Tuesday night as tournament hosts Brazil take on Germany (BBC1, 9pm). The big talking point ahead of the match will be the absence of Brazil's talismanic Neymar, who fractured a vertebra in the quarter-final win over Colombia on Friday night, and plenty of people are tipping Germany to take full advantage this week.

Neither of these teams have really hit top gear yet and we are still waiting for a side to really produce a performance worthy of World Cup winners. Brazil have flattered to deceive at times as they won Group A courtesy of a 3-1 win over Croatia, a 0-0 draw with Mexico and a 4-1 victory against Cameroon, before they edged past Chile on penalties in the last-sixteen and they overcame Colombia 2-1 with some rough-housing of James Rodriguez in the last-eight.

Brazil go into this semi-final as a 9/5 chance with Bet Victor and there is nothing to choose between them and Germany, who are also priced 9/5 in the match betting. The Germans won Group G as they overcame Portugal 4-0 before they were held to a 2-2 draw by Ghana and they edged past USA 1-0. They needed extra-time to beat Algeria 2-1 in the last-sixteen and they were far more comfortable than the scoreline suggests during their 1-0 win over France in the quarter-finals.

Joachim Low's side can now look forward to their fourth successive appearance in a World Cup semi-finals and they are arguably the most well organised team left in the competition this summer. They have kept three clean sheets in their five games and they have shared the goals around the side, with six different players scoring each of their last six goals.

Thomas Muller has weighed in with four goals during the tournament so far and he is 7/1 to be first goalscorer on Tuesday, while Miroslav Klose can be backed at 13/2 as he bids to become the record goalscorer at World Cup finals. Klose currently has 15 goals to his name at finals, a record he currently shares with Brazilian legend Ronaldo, and he will be desperate to get that sixteenth goal he needs to stand above all others.

Klose actually played in the last Brazil v Germany meeting at a World Cup when the Brazilians won the 2002 final between the sides 2-0. They have met three times since, winning one each and drawing the other, with Germany winning an entertaining friendly 3-2 when they last met in 2011.

It is interesting to note that Germany needed a goal from defender Matts Hummels to beat France in the quarter-finals on Friday though, while Brazil's last three goals have all been scored by defenders. Both teams boast a tremendous presence from set pieces and the method of the first goal to be scored with a header on Tuesday could be worth a punt at 9/2 with PaddyPower, who will refund losing first scorer, last scorer, correct score and scorecast single bets on the match if it goes to penalties.

David Luiz has popped up with two goals in his last two outings, including a 'howitzer' of a free-kick against Colombia last time out, and he is a massive 22/1 to be first goalscorer or 9/1 to score anytime this week. The worry for Brazil will be the fact that they are without Luiz's fellow centre back, Thiago Silva, who is suspended for Tuesday's match.

Dante is likely to come in for Silva but the hosts also have an issue with how they replace Neymar, who has scored four goals in this tournament. The 22-year-old has been ruled out of the finals and Oscar is likely to now play the number ten role, with Chelsea's Willian coming into midfield.

Willian's pace and directness could prove handy on Tuesday and they will no doubt target German left back Benedikt Howedes. The Schalke centre-half is being asked to play out of position by Joachim Low and he has looked like the weak link in this German side. Howedes will certainly have his work cut out in trying to contain Brazil's marauding right-back Dani Alves and Ladbrokes offer a tempting 12/5 for Howedes to be shown a card.

Luiz Felipe Scolari will no doubt be imploring his Brazil players to win the tournament for Neymar now and there has been a strong feeling that it is their 'destiny' to go all the way this summer. They have qualified for the final from each of their last six appearances in a World Cup semi-final, albeit they haven't reached this stage since 2002, and Germany now stand between them and a date with 'destiny' at the weekend.
