Basel v Man Utd Odds: Reds need a draw to progress

Manchester United face a nervy clash against Basel on Wednesday night as they look to pick up the point that ensures their place in the Champions League knockout stages. United are 4/7 odds on favourites to win at the Sankt Jakob-Park, although Basel can qualify with a win and they are priced 5/1, with the draw available at 11/4 with Ladbrokes.

Basel have shown they are no pushovers as they gave United plenty of problems in the 3-3 draw between the two at Old Trafford earlier this season. The Swiss side are currently third in Group C, one point behind United in second, and they must beat United to qualify for the last sixteen, while a draw is enough for United to go through.

Alexander Frei will be looking to continue his fine form for Basel, who currently top the Swiss League, and he has scored 15 in his last 16 matches, with Ladbrokes.com offering 7/1 that he scores first and 11/5 that he scores anytime on Wednesday.

The problem for Basel is that they will have to cope without the injured Gillen Yapi and Kay Voser, while their recent record against English opposition is poor as they have won just one of five against English teams at home. They are yet to win in three matches against United and they have it all to do this week.

United have failed to impress so far this term and it looks likely that they will finish second in Group C to Benfica, who play Otelul Galati on Wednesday. Sir Alex Ferguson will be worried by his team's recent form, although they did pick up a first win in four against Aston Villa at the weekend.

Saturday's Premier League victory was their fourth 1-0 win in their last eight matches and the correct score of 1-0 to the Reds can be backed at 6/1 with Ladbrokes. United do look good value to keep a clean sheet as they have kept seven clean sheets and conceded only one goal in their last eight Champions League away matches.

Ladbrokes go an industry best priced 11/8 for United to keep a clean sheet and for a bit more value it could be worth backing the win to nil at 13/8. It could be a low scoring affair, particularly as United know that a draw is enough. Six of their last seven away matches have involved under 2.5 goals and under 2.5 is priced 6/5 this week.

Where United's goals are going to come from is likely to be a bigger issue, particularly as Javier Hernandez is out for the next four weeks. Wayne Rooney is 4/1 favourite to score first but he has only scored three in his last eleven appearances and all of those came against Group C whipping boys Otelul Galati.

With Basel having to push on in search of a win, United can afford to hit them on the counter-attack and Ashley Young's pace could come in handy. The former Villa winger is a tempting 8/1 to score first as he and his teammates look to secure their safe progress.
