Scotland head out to Liechtenstein on Saturday for this vital Group I clash in Euro 2012 qualification. In a group which contains World and Europeam champions Spain, Scotland are chasing second place and a possible play-off to get into next year's finals in Poland and the Ukraine. Nothing less than a win on Saturday will do for Craig Levin's side and the bookmakers make them odds on to do so, with Bet365 going 1/4 about a Scottish win with Liechtenstein 11/1 and the draw 9/2.
Scotland currently sit third in Group I of qualifying, two points behind the Czech Republic and with both teams having to play Spain before the end of qualification, a win here is vital to Craig Levin's sides chances. The Czech Republic face Spain on Friday night and if that match goes as suspected a win against bottom of the group Liechtenstein could see Scotland leap-frog the Czech Republic into second place in the group, behind the already qualified Spain.
The best runners-up from eight of the groups will go into a two match play-off for next summers' finals but as is the norm with Scottish football, it could well be out of their hands. Even a win against Liechtenstein and defeat for the Czech Republic in Spain on Friday might not be enough to ensure a second place spot, as Scotland then finish their Group I campaign in Spain, a game in which they will be long odds against to win. The Czech Republic will be favourites away in Lithuania next Tuesday and it's set to be a nerve wracking few days for Scottish supporters.
Goals have been hard to come by for Scotland during this campaign and they could come to rue the 0-0 draw in Lithuania in Matchday 1. Add to that a terrible piece of luck against the Czech Republic two matches ago when the visitors were awared a dubious 90th minute penalty and this group could look very different now.
With just seven goals in their six matches in qualification, Levin has been prone to playing with just one forward in attack, usually Kenny Miller and it will be interesting to see if he throws off the shackles on Saturday in Liechtenstein against the Group's bottom side. Miller heads the first goalscorer market at 9/2 with Bet 365 and the Cardiff man is likely to spearhead the attack, regardless of the formation.
Liechtenstein have conceded sixteen goals in qualification although ten of those were against Spain. With Scotland struggling to find the net we could be looking at a low scoring game, with under 2.5 goals a decent bet at 19/20 with Bet365. At odds of 1/4, you wouldn't be jumping to back Scotland here, in fact, the 21/10 about the draw with Scotland -1 goal on the handicap looks a better value bet.
