Scotland must brush away the disappointment of conceding a late equaliser to the Czech Republic on Saturday when they face Lithuania in their Euro 2012 Group I qualifier on Tuesday night. Craig Levein was incensed when the referee awarded the Czech Republic a dubious penalty in stoppage time at Hampden at the weekend and then didn't award the Scots a penalty down the other end. The final score was 2-2 which left Scotland five points adrift of the Czech Republic in Group I, albeit with a game in hand. Said game in hand is at home to Lithuania in Glasgow on Tuesday night, with a win vital if Scotland are going to have any hopes of qualifying for next summer's European Championships via the play-off route. Bookmaker Bet365 makes Scotland 4/7 to get the three points, with the draw 14/5 and Lithuania 5/1.
The Czech Republic are now long odds on favourites to secure second place in Group I behind Spain who are all but qualified in defence of their European title next summer in the Ukraine and Poland. Scotland are around a 5/1 chance to still finish second, but they must first take advantage of their game in hand on Tuesday by beating Lithuania at Hampden and then hope that the Czech Republic drop points against Spain and Lithuania in their remaining two games. A win for Craig Levein's side would put them two points behind the Czech's, then giving them the chance to leapfrog them in the next round of fixtures in October when Scotland face Liechtenstein away and the Czech Republic play Spain at home. Assuming those results go Scotland's way, the Tartan Army would then have a point advantage going in to the final round of matches, where Scotland face Spain in Alicante and the Czech Republic play away in Lithuania.
Back to Tuesday's game and Scotland will be looking for an improvement on the 0-0 scoreline they achieved in Kaunas over a year ago, with the odds for a repeat scoreline 8/1 with Bet 365. Lithuania are actually on the same number of points as Scotland, five, in Group I although they have played a game more. Lithuania won 1-0 away in the Czech Republic and will certainly be no pushovers. Goals look like being hard to come by for the away side having drawn a blank in three of their six games, although they managed to pick up a consolation in both of their fixtures against table toppers Spain. Scotland are 10/11 to keep a clean sheet with Bet365.
With Kenny Miller missing, Blackburn Rovers frontman David Goodwillie is set to start up front for Scotland and is 5/1 to score the first goal. Barry Robson is 17/2 to net first which could make some appeal as the player gets on the scoresheet regularly from midfield. With Scotland pressing, they may have to change their shape to get any joy on Tuesday night and the draw probably looks the best value in the match betting.
