Northern Ireland visit Estonia on Tuesday knowing that they must get a win to keep their slim hopes of Euro 2012 qualification alive.
Nigel Worthington’s side hopes of taking the play-off spot in Group C suffered a big blow last Friday night when they lost 1-0 to Serbia at Windsor Park. An error from Steven Davis gifted Marko Pantelic a 67th minute goal and pole position in the battle for second place.
The result has pushed Northern Ireland down to fifth in the group and in a four way battle with Slovenia, Slovakia and Estonia to finish runner-up in the Group to Italy. With three games remaining Northern Ireland are two points behind Serbia and Slovenia, with a game in hand over the latter. Two of those games are against Estonia.
Estonia have been the surprises of the Group and on Friday night secured a third win in their qualifying campaign. They travelled to Slovenia in a game few expected them to win however a first-half penalty from Konstantin Vassiljev give them an unexpected lead before the home side leveled in the 78th minute. The home fans celebrations were short lived as three minutes substitute Ats Purje scored the winner to give Estonia a 2-1 away win.
It was the Estonians second major away scalp of the group having beaten Serbia 3-1 in Belgrade. Only for a shock 2-0 defeat away to the Faroe Islands in June, Estonia would be two points clear in second place and on course to make the play-offs.
Northern Ireland can take hope from the fact that Estonia’s only home win in Group C came against the lowly Faroe Islands, a win that was unlikely after they had rely on two injury time goals. One could argue that the Estonians are a limited side who caught Slovenia and Serbia by surprise with their away wins.
They have conceded 12 goals in the campaign with only the Faroe Islands having a worse goal difference.
The problem for Northern Ireland is that they may not be good enough to take advantage as they have shown weakness in front of goal. They have only managed to score seven goals o far in the group and it’s likely to be the undoing of Nigel Worthington’s side in his bid to qualify.
Estonia are on a high after their latest win and this may be the catalyst for them to secure a narrow win over Northern Ireland.
Unibet make Estonia the narrow favourites to win the game at 2.30 with Northern Ireland available at 2.88 in the betting. It is hard to see Northern Ireland getting an away win considering how tough they’ve found scoring goals. Estonia in front of a boisterous home crowd can take all three points.
