The Npower Championship odds for the 2010/2011 season reflect just how competitive this league has become in recent years and the fact that the shortest priced team for the title in the betting is Middlesbrough at 6/1, followed by 12 teams between 8/1 and 16/1goes some way to highlighting just how close bookmakers expect the division to be over the coming season.
Boro have been the Championship's biggest spenders during the summer, with manager Gordon Strachan raiding his former club Celtic and Rangers to sign Steven McManus, Kevin Thomson and Kris Boyd. Add the capture of midfielder, Nicky Bailey, from Charlton and they've spent over £5 million! A statement of intent it certainly is but the required improvement on last year's 11th place is not so certain and at the odds, it may be worth looking elsewhere in the betting, especially when you consider that only one of the last ten antepost favourites in this division has gone on to finish top.
Nottingham Forest are the second favourites to win the division at best odds of 9/1 with Victor Chandler but no incoming signings during the summer casts doubts over whether they'll be able to improve on last season's third place finish but under the guidance of manager, Billy Davies, they are sure to be there or thereabouts come May and if you fancy back them for the title, it's worth noting that Victor Chandler will refund your stake if they fail to win the league but still finish in the top six.

Other teams towards the top of the betting include relegated Burnley who will be looking to bounce back to the Premier League at the first time of asking. Far from disgraced in the top flight, the Clarets did not overspend of big names players but the focus was more on building a team of proven Championship players and that continued in the close season with the signings of Chris Iwelumo from Wolves, Dean Marney from Hull, Lee Grant from Sheffield Wednesday and Ross Wallace from local rivals, Preston, all of whom will add further quality to a squad that should be capable of mounting a challenge at the top
The other two sides relegated from the Premier League, Hull and Portsmouth, both start the season with financial problems off the field and as such, it is difficult to have confidence about them making their presence felt at the right end of the table and this is reflected in the bookies odds, with Pompey as big as 28/1 and Hull a best price 22/1 chance with Bet365.
Cardiff City is another team with financial problems halting their ability to bring in new signings but the Bluebirds cannot be written off as they proved when reaching the Championship Play-Off final last season and with Michael Chopra and Peter Whittingham, who both featured in the Top Scorers table last term, still amongst the ranks they are sure to have their backers at 22/1, also with Bet365.
Of the other contenders, it would appear that Bristol City also have their eyes frimly set on promotion. Following the appointment Steve Coppell in May, the board have backed the manager who who won the title with Reading four years ago with the signing of David James, arguably the transfer coup of the Summer and one which makes the 20/1 about the Robins with Coral.
Queens Park Rangers are another side who have recently appointed a new manager with Neil Warnock the man chosen to deliver a return on the big investment at Loftus Road. Having guided Sheffield United to promotion to the Premier League, Warnock is sure to have QPR challenging at the right end of the table and some shrewd signings together with his knowledge of the division makes Rangers a likely force and can be backed at a general 12/1.
In recent times, it has been common for at least one of the teams promoted from League One to continue their momementum with promoted sides finishing in the play-offs in five of the last ten and it would be no surprise if Leeds (18/1), Norwich (18/1) or Millwall (33/1) continue that trend.
Whilst it's a cliche, it is true that 'any team can beat anybody in the Championship' and predicting the winner of any match, let alone the league is a tough assignment, but with that comes excitement and unpredictabiltiy with every match played and as Blackpool proved last season and Burnley the season before, promotion is not beyond the realms of possibility for any team in the Championship.
