The 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament is underway in the United States and it is Mexico and the US who head the betting for the month long event. Mexico edge favouritism at 6/5 with Bet 365, with the teams divided into three groups of four before the knockout stages, and the eventual winner will represent the CONCACAF in the 2013 Confederations Cup in Brazil.
Mexico opened their campaign in Group A with a convincing 5-0 win over El Salvador on Monday and the defending champions are well backed to go all the way again this year. Manchester United's Javier Hernandez weighed in with a hat trick and his form could be crucial to their hopes with plenty of 'home' support for the Mexicans in America.
Costa Rica also opened up with a 5-0 win as they destroyed Cuba in Group A and they could be dark horses for the tournament. The Costa Ricans are priced 11/1 to win the Gold Cup outright by Bet365.com and the 2009 semi-finalists should make the knockout stages comfortably, with El Salvador and Cuba looking below par at this level.
In Group B, the unpredictable Honduras are available at 10/1 in the betting to win the tournament and they are 1/2 on to top the Group and qualify for the quarter-finals. There are plenty of Hondurans who are well known to regular Premier League watchers, including Wilson Palacios and Maynor Figueroa, and their biggest threat in Group B could come from Jamaica.
The Jamaicans are thought to have their best team since the 1998 World Cup and with Donovan Ricketts in goal they can be backed at 16/1 to win the competition outright and 6/4 to win their Group, with Guatemala and Grenada, making only their second Gold Cup appearance, completing the Group.
The USA head the betting in Group C as they are second favourites at 13/8 to win the tournament and they are 1/4 on to win Group C. Their side is made up of plenty of star names from English and major league football, including Landon Donovan, Michael Bradley and Clint Dempsey.
Assuming Mexico and USA top their groups then they would be on course to meet in the final and nine of the last ten titles, including each of the last five, have been won by either Mexico or USA. The USA were winners in 2007 and if they did make the final they will take great heart from their record against the Mexicans - played 16, won nine and lost only two.
It might not be that straightforward though as also in Group C are Canada, who are the only team to have broken the Mexico-USA monopoly in the past ten Gold Cups as they won in 2000. B365 price the Canadians as 25/1 outsiders to repeat their 2000 success, with Panama and Guadeloupe completing Group C, but it is difficult to see past a Mexico-USA final.
