League Two Swindon take on Premier League opposition in the third round of the FA Cup when they host Wigan at the County Ground on Saturday afternoon. Despite the huge gulf in league positions, the match odds are surprisingly tight and there is little to choose between the two sides, with Wigan priced 6/4 and Swindon 13/8 by Boylesports.
It is perhaps a little disappointing that there isn't more value in backing Swindon but we fancy them to come away with a positive result and the draw could be the way to go at odds of 9/4.
The match odds are a reflection of how well Swindon have been doing under the management of Paolo Di Canio and are also a damning indictment of how poor Wigan have been this season. Swindon are currently fourth in League Two and have overcome Huddersfield and Colchester to reach the third round this weekend.
Swindon don't play in the same mould as Di Canio did as a player and they are more efficient and structured than you would expect the Italian's side to be. They have only conceded four goals in their last eight matches and ten of their last twelve in the league have involved under 2.5 goals, with Boylesports.com offering 5/6 for under 2.5 on Saturday.
Di Canio's men will look to keep it tight early and it could be worth a look at the double result of a half time and full time draw at odds of 17/4 for a bit more value. The Wiltshire club are unbeaten in eleven matches in all competitions at home and they will hope Alan Connell can continue his resurgent form after notching two goals in his last two appearances, with Boylesports going 7/1 for Connell to be first goalscorer.
Wigan manager Roberto Martinez has indicated that he is likely to field some of his fringe players on Saturday and that could be a dangerous move. It is understandable as their immediate focus is avoiding Premier League relegation but they could leave themselves open to embarrassment at the County Ground.
The Latics have never won at the County Ground and they have failed to win any of their last five matches in the Premier League, a run that has left them in nineteenth place. They have been all over the place defensively of late, conceding eleven in their last three and keeping just one clean sheet in their last eighteen.
Both teams to score is 7/10 odds on this weekend and Swindon have only failed to score once in their last fourteen at home. Wigan have won two and only lost one of their last four away matches, with those two victories their only successes in eleven attempts away from the DW Stadium,
This weekend's match looks set up for an upset and we fancy Swindon to force a replay at least and they can be backed at 1/2 to win or draw in the double chance market, while the correct score of 1-1 is available at 11/2.
