The draw for the third round of the FA Cup has thrown up some mouth-watering ties, with a couple of all-Premier League encounters and some possible cup upsets in store in January. Manchester City against Manchester United is the stand out tie of the round, although it is Chelsea who head the betting to win the tournament outright at 11/2 with William Hill.
City and United will meet for the first time since the Blues romped to a 6-1 victory at Old Trafford in October. The current Premier League leaders won the FA Cup last year to get the Roberto Mancini era up and running properly as they secured the famous trophy for the first time since 1969. Hills offer them at an industry best priced 7/1 to win outright for a second season in a row.
United though haven't won the FA Cup since their 2004 victory over Millwall in the final and they are now 8/1 in the outright betting.
It leaves Chelsea as marginal outright favourites, despite their recent unconvincing form. They face troubled Championship side Portsmouth in the third round and the Blues certainly have a fine recent tradition in the FA Cup as they have won it twice in the past three years and three times in the past five.
Andre Villas-Boas will be keen to do well in the competition as the Premier League looks out of reach on the basis of their form this season. Liverpool too will be looking for the FA Cup as a source of silverware this season as Kenny Dalglish bids to get earn his first trophy in his latest stint as Reds manager. They are currently 7/1 in the outright betting with William Hill and they take on Southend or Oldham in the third round.
Next best in the betting is Arsenal at 8/1 and they are another side that are desperate for silverware as they haven't won a trophy since their Premier League and FA Cup double success of 2005. Since then there have been plenty of hard luck stories and they can ill afford any slip ups in their third round match at home to Leeds.
Arsenal's north London rivals Tottenham are available at a tempting 10/1 with WilliamHill.com as they continue to impress in the Premier League. Spurs have been handed a relatively kind draw at home to Cheltenham in their first match of the tournament and they are available at a tempting 9/1 to win the FA Cup - a competition they haven't won since 1991.
Everton are the best of the rest at 16/1 with Hills after they drew Tamworth, while Stoke, finalists last season, are available at 25/1. Meanwhile, Sunderland, who now have Martin O'Neill as manager, are priced 40/1 and they face a tricky trip to Peterborough. O'Neill's former club Aston Villa (28/1) have also been handed a tricky away tie as they head to Bristol Rovers.
11/2 Chelsea
7/1 Man City
7/1 Liverpool
8/1 Arsenal
8/1 Man United
9/1 Tottenham
16/1 Everton
25/1 Stoke
