This is a critical week for the Rep of Ireland if they are to qualify for Euro 2012 next summer. The crunch match-up and expected decider to see if they can qualify is next Tuesday at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin against Armenia, but before then Giovanni Trapattoni’s side must beat minnows Andorra away on Friday night in what should be a relatively straight-forward victory.
Ireland currently sit second in group B just two points behind leaders Russia, and wins in their remaining two games will see them earn at least a playoff spot for Euro 2012. The side will know that a tricky test lies ahead next week against an Armenia side who recently beat Slovakia 4-0 away from home, but first, however, Andorra must be taken care and Ireland are massive 1/33 favourites with Unibet to get the job done.
His tactics may be narrow-minded and too traditionalist for the modern game, but Giovanni Trapattoni has got this Irish side on the verge of qualification for a major tournament for the first time since 2002. Ireland play a rigid 4-4-2 system that has both its strong points and flaws; the team is organised and can frustrate sides but there is a serious lack of creativity in how the team plays.
Impressively, Ireland have kept clean sheets in their last seven games, but they have also not scored in their last three. These stats are a prime example of the positives and negatives of Trapattoni’s style of play but they shouldn’t be a concern when facing sides such as their opponents on Friday night.
The last time Andorra didn’t lose a game was back in 2007 when they drew at home to Armenia. Not much will be expected from the side when they face Ireland but they will be just hoping to make it competitive and keep the score low.
Andorra have failed to score at home since a World Cup qualifier in 2009 and they really offer nothing upfront, but in defence they haven’t been that bad during this qualification campaign and they lost to Slovakia by just one goal and to Russia by two. Ireland are never a side who will win by a massive margin and a 2-0 scoreline at 9/2 with Unibet looks like a nice wager for the game. Strikers Robbie Keane, Kevin Doyle and Shane Long are more than capable of bagging a couple of goals.
