Russia will start this key Euro 2012 Group B Qualifier in Moscow as 3/4 odds on favourites with Paddy Power to beat the Republic of Ireland who have odds themselves to win of 4/1 while the draw can be backed at 12/5.
A win of course for Russia would put them into a commanding position at the top of the Group, they would be five points clear of the Republic with just two games to go and a Russian win would also make second place in Group B difficult to grasp for the plucky Irish. Nonetheless Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni will not feel overawed, he has guided his team into a position of contention in the Group, where they have become a very hard team to beat. The draw earned against Slovakia the other night in Dublin did not necessarily help their cause, but it still keeps them on level points with the Slovaks and if they can come away with a draw at least, then hopes will remain high of at least a play-off place. Trapattoni also knows that his defence is rock solid with only six goals conceded in the Group and in the last six games, competitive or otherwise they have kept ‘clean sheets’. Ireland also emphatically won the 2011 Nations Cup after defeating Scotland, N Ireland and Wales earlier on this year.
Three of those goals conceded in the Group however came against Russia in the reverse fixture in Dublin last October, when Russia went away with a 3-2 win, inflicting Ireland’s only defeat in Group B. That game began as a nightmare for Ireland, who went behind a very classy looking Russian team by three goals to nil, before staging a quite brilliant late fightback which saw them claw two of the goals back. However it was not enough to even earn them a point, but should they take anything resembling that fighting spirit to Moscow then they have every chance of upsetting the hosts.
What possibly might not be in the favour of the Irish is the artificial pitch used at the Luzhniki Stadium, which is better suited to passing teams rather than the long ball specialists such as Ireland. However, Russia are not infallible at home, they were beaten by Slovakia here a year ago and Ireland, who will not necessarily be at full strength will have good footballers, such as Robbie Keane and Damien Duff in the team. Keane in fact has netted five goals for the Republic in Euro 2012 Qualification so far and is looking more than a reasonable bet to be on the scoresheet at some point during the match with odds of 13/5 and he also has odds of 7/1 to be the match’s first scorer. Amongst those being backed to score the first goal is Spurs striker, Roman Pavlyuchenko who has odds of 11/2 while his strike partner, Aleksandr Kerzhakov is the favourite with odds of 4/1. Next comes Pavel Pogrebnyak at 5/1, while Arsenal’s Andrei Arshavin is also an 11/2 option. Pavlyuchenko has already scored four Group B goals, while Kerzhakov and Pogrebnyak have both netted three.
No matter which you look at this match, the simple truth is that it is difficult to predict. Yes Russia it would appear has all the natural advantages, but Ireland has a very stubborn defence which could ultimately lead to a scoreless match. All things considered this outcome in fact is not a bad bet at all particularly with the attractive odds of 6/1 being available from Paddy Power.com. It is also a result that would be snapped up by Trapattoni, particularly with Ireland’s final games being against Andorra and Armenia. With the best will in the world it is hard to see Ireland finshing those two games and not scoring maximum points, which at the very least would give them an almost certain play-off place.
