Community Shield 2011 Odds: Betting makes Man Utd favourites to beat City

Cross city rivals Manchester United and Manchester City get top flight football off to its traditional start on Sunday afternoon when they meet in the Community Shield at Wembley. The red half of Manchester start as 23/20 favourites to win the match according to William Hill, while the blues are a 2/1 punt.

However, three of the last four Community Shields have gone to penalties and the draw after 90 minutes looks a decent punt at odds of 21/10. If the match is a draw after 90 minutes there will be no extra time and the teams will go straight to penalties, with both sides available at industry best prices of 5/1 to win on penalties.

Interestingly the last four Community Shield winners have gone on to win that season's Premier League title and United will know that very well as they have won three of the past four.

Last season's league winners have strengthened their squad even further this season as they have brought in Ashley Young, Phil Jones and David De Gea in a bid to reach Barcelona's standards after their Champions League final defeat to the Spanish side last term. Young in particular looks a good addition as he scored eleven goals in a struggling Villa side last season and he could offer good value as an each-way punt at 9/1 in the first goalscorer odds.

It is Wayne Rooney who starts as favourite to score first with Hills though at industry best priced odds of 11/2. Rooney has been in good form in pre-season, scoring four goals, and who can forget his goal of the season against City last season?

Javier Hernandez is out of the match though after suffering concussion during pre-season, where United won all five of their matches.

City too have been in good nick during pre-season as they went unbeaten in their five matches, including a 3-0 win over Inter Milan in the Dublin Super Cup. The unsettled Mario Balotelli opened the scoring that day and he is 7/1 to be first goalscorer this weekend.

Balotelli is likely to start the match as want-away striker Carlos Tevez has been given extra  time to recover from the Copa America and is set to miss the match against his former club, while £38m new signing Sergio Aguero is a fitness doubt.

The match offers a prime opportunity to for City to show their bitter rivals that they mean business this season after winning their first piece of silverware in 35 years in the FA Cup last season. Their success under Roberto Mancini has been built on a solid defence as they kept 18 clean sheets and a City clean sheet on Sunday is a 9/4 punt.

Their FA Cup success included a 1-0 win over United in the semi-final at Wembley and that was the third time in four meetings that this fixture has ended with under 2.5 goals. Under 2.5 this weekend is 4/6 on, while WilliamHill.com offer a 'Match x Goals' market of a draw combined with under 2.5 goals at 3/1.
