Liverpool and Oldham get a weekend of FA Cup action underway on Friday night and the Reds start as odds on favourites at Anfield. They have won all three previous FA Cup ties with Oldham and start as 1/8 odds on to win this third round tie, while Oldham are a juicy 16/1 to cause an upset and 15/2 to grab a draw according to Ladbrokes.
The competition has always been about the romance of lower league sides knocking out their bigger, richer rivals and for those who fancy an upset at Anfield there are a few factors in Oldham's favour. Liverpool have lost in the third round of the FA Cup for the past two years and have only won one of their last four FA Cup meetings with lower league opposition.
Furthermore, Oldham tasted success on Merseyside in 2008 when they beat Liverpool's rivals Everton in the third round but Liverpool will be keen to avoid the same fate. Liverpool have won all three of their FA Cup matches against Oldham and it is tough to see an upset here.
The match looks to be an ideal opportunity for Andy Carroll to end his ten match goal drought and he is the 5/2 favourite to score first. Kenny Dalglish opted to field strong sides against Brighton and Exeter in the early rounds of the Carling Cup this season and he could well stick with the same method. It is also a chance for Dirk Kuyt to end his own fifteen match scoring drought and he is available at 4/1 to score first.
The concern for Dalglish will be the fact that his side have conceded five goals in their last three matches in the Premier League, having kept three consecutive clean sheets prior to that. The 3-0 loss at Man City on Tuesday was down to some woeful defending and the odds of 5/4 for both teams to score could be worth a look.
Ladbrokes also offer 13/8 for both teams to score and Liverpool to win the match, with Oldham arriving at Anfield with nothing to lose. Paul Dickov's side are currently fourteenth in League One after winning just three of their last nine matches.
Shefki Kuqi is likely to lead the attack and the big centre forward has plenty of experience at Premier League level. He has notched 13 goals this season and he could be worth an each-way punt to score first at odds of 12/1 with Ladbrokes.com.
Meanwhile, Oldham have proven to be tough to break down this season and their last four away matches have involved under 2.5 goals. 70% of Liverpool's league matches have involved under 2.5 goals this season and without the suspended Luis Suarez to create chances it could be worth backing under 3.5 goals at 10/11.
Ultimately it is tough to see beyond a Liverpool win though and the Reds to win by a margin of three goals can be backed at odds of 7/2 as they look to avoid a famous upset.
