Middlesbrough take on Watford at the Riverside Stadium on Saturday evening in a match that pits together two teams at opposite ends of the Championship table. While Middlesbrough are flying high up in third place, Watford are hovering dangerously above the relegation side following a poor start to the season. However, both sides head into the match on the back of a midweek win which should make it a closely fought contest. Middlesbrough are the odds-on 8/13 favourites with Paddy Power while Watford are priced at 9/2 to come away with a valuable three points.
Middlesbrough bounced back from their disappointing defeat to promotion rivals Southampton by beating Doncaster 3-1 on Tuesday night. Boro may have emerged as one of the major candidates for promotion but they have stuttered recently, winning only twice in eight games.
Meanwhile, Watford have endured a shaky start to the season and were unable to register a win until their seventh league game. Results have gradually started to improve and their midweek win against Brighton was their second on the bounce and it will no doubt have boosted their confidence ahead of Saturday’s match. The Hornets have the narrow advantage in terms of recent head-to-head records, beating Boro twice in the last four meetings between the sides.
Middlesbrough Striker Marvin Emnes has seven league goals to his name this season, and with two in his last three matches, he looks a good bet at 7/2 to open the scoring on Saturday. Barry Robson scored two at Doncaster on Tuesday and has been priced at 4/1 to score first, while Luke Williams is available at 6/1. Watford’s key man in attack is Marvin Sordell who has hit the back of the net on four occasions and is 9/1 to open the scoring, while Chris Iwelumo has been handed odds of 8/1 to be the game’s first goalscorer with Paddy Power.
Middlesbrough have yet to experience defeat at the Riverside this season and with home advantage it is difficult to look past Tony Mowbray’s men winning their second match in five days, with a 2-0 win found at 13/2. Boro are also available at 9/1 to come from behind and win, as they did against Doncaster. Watford have only the one win to their name on the road this season, however, fresh from back-to-back wins they could sneak a win a 2-1 victory at 14/1. At 11/4 a draw may be the way to go, Boro have been held five times at home this season, including four consecutive draws with two of them ending goalless.
