Birmingham City boss, Alex McLeish takes his team to Upton Park this Sunday for their latest Barclays Premier League match against a potentially resurgent West Ham United, winners of their last two games and in determined mood to continue their good form. The Bookmakers have in fact made West Ham the clear cut favourites in the betting to win the match, with odds of 11/10 on offer from amongst others Paddy Power who also go 13/5 against a Birmingham win and 23/10 the draw. The match will be screened live on Sky Sports on Sunday afternoon.
Having had the dreaded ‘vote of confidence’ already this season, West Ham boss, Avram Grant, was all smiles following his side’s excellent 3-1 win against Blackpool in midweek, a result that has lifted them from the very bottom rung of the Premier League relegation zone into a position from which if they win this match could take them clear. By contrast such an outcome would leave Birmingham in the zone and struggling as they have exactly the same amounts of points as the ‘Hammers’, although they do have two games in hand.
Grant will also be pleased that his loan signing of Robbie Keane from Spurs looks to have been a sharp bit of business, with the Irishman scoring in his usual predatory way on his debut against Blackpool. However, even more importantly the form of Victor Obinna will be a real thrill for Grant and the West Ham faithful, who have witnessed the Nigerian forward score five times in these last two games, firstly netting a hat trick in the FA Cup 4th Round win over Nottingham Forest last week, followed up by grabbing a brace against Blackpool. Punters therefore should be looking very closely at the 7/1 in the First Goalscorer Betting on offer from Paddy power about him to score the opening goal in this match and they might also want to consider Keane in the same market at 5/1.
Despite their 0-5 reverse against Manchester United last month, Birmingham have also bounced back with a couple of ‘Cup’ wins, the important one being their 3-1 win over West Ham at St Andrews in the Carling Cup semi final just 10 days ago, which put them into the Carling Cup Final. McLeish will no doubt be reminding his players that they beat West Ham that night and they can do so again in this match. However he will remember that they did lose 1-2 at Upton Park in the first leg in that semi final tie and they also lost this fixture last season by 0-2.
The two cup wins have obviously restored some confidence in the Birmingham team as they showed in their last Premier League outing in midweek where they came back twice from behind to earn a 2-2 draw with big spending Manchester City. Top scorer Craig Gardner was on the scoresheet once again in that match and he is a worthwhile punt in this match to score at anytime, particularly with the attractive betting odds on offer from Paddy Power of 7/2.
All in all a close game looks a certainty, with it possibly swaying towards the West Ham, mainly due to their home advantage. In the most recent games played between the two sides there has been goals scored, which should be enough to persuade the punter to back a scoreline of perhaps a West Ham win either by 2-1 or 3-2.
